Aibu. It should be women’s clothes that are longer and not children’s

Dd is tall and slim with long legs and long arms. No idea where this body shape comes from as we are all short with stubby legs.

All Ds’s trousers (women’s size 4-6) look like pedal pushers when she puts them on
Coats are always short in the arm.
She has resigned herself to having cold wrists and cold ankles unless she spends
££s on getting the right leg length and arm length

Passing the children’s section in a store we spotted a really nice looking jacket.

She tried it on and it fitted perfectly. Even the cuffs came down to her wrists. We then looked at trousers, age 14.
The leg length was noticeably longer than the adult section.

We went to look at the adult section of another store and nothing fitted her properly
Coat sleeves finishing somewhere south of her elbows and leggings finishing north of her ankles same department store children’s section and everything again was longer and fitted her perfectly

Inspired by this she got a good selection of clothes from the children’s section age 12-14. Trousers, t.shirts, jackets and leggings. that actually fitted her.

A lot of adult trousers look like they have a long legs but I have no idea who these trousers are supposed to fit but most of the length is the bum area.

I am definitely not tall or slim and my legs and arms are definitely short. I have tried on trousers where the crotch is somewhere around my knees.

Aibu that sizing for women’s clothing is really strange

@RubertRoo

I am 6ft tall and often find that the children's cardigans in age 15-16 have longer arms than most of the women's size 10 ones!
This exactly

I would love to know the reasoning behind this.

Probably because the average height is rising, and parents look for a bit extra length as kids tend to grow.

I also wear men's joggers and jeans. The joggers have pockets, the jeans have deep pockets

But when they become an adult the sleeves become shorter.

They are bracelet length sleeves
and trousers are ankle grazers.

I can't get on with either

The average 16 year old girl would be taller than the average woman.

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 13:33

But the average height of a woman remains quite low as people are living longer and will be shorter because old age or because of their generation

JohnSmithDrive · 27/12/2021 13:36

I think there must be an assumption (probably true?) that the average size 10 woman is shorter than average

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 13:37

Apologies for the weird english. I mean things like nutrition and immigration and so on

For example, dutch people tend to be tall, but immigration has meant that the people who live in the Netherlands are shorter on average than they used to be

Older people might have had fewer nutrients are they were children when there was rationing

I mean, on average, taller women will also be wider

But each generation is taller than their parents. It’s an important factor in ergonomics/anthropometrics

MabelsApron · 27/12/2021 14:03

For the fellow short women on the thread… there’s the shortlist (shoptheshortlist.co.uk/) which is a fledging company that tailors its ranges to women under 5ft 4.

Unfortunately I’m short and fat so I’m screwed but it may work for others. Quite pricey though - but then we’ve gotten too used to really cheap clothes with bad manufacture practices.

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 14:03

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow, children are usually taller than the shorter of their two parents.

What you have though is the average height for women. A DD might be 25 and 5'8, the DM might be 60 and 5'6" and the nan who was 5'4" might have lost a few inches in height due to age, so the average would not be 5'8 but 5'4"

When the DM was 25 it would have been slightly higher because the DM's DGM would not still be alive

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/12/2021 14:07

No, it’s a scientific thing. Even if parents shrink, each generation is taller than their parents.

It might not last, but it is one of the corner stones of design in terms of ergonomics, although no manufacturers ever pay any attention to it, because it’s expensive.

gogohm · 27/12/2021 14:12

Where are these short trousers, my dd is 5'1 size 12 adult and really struggles to find trousers short enough. I'm 5'6 and trousers fit perfectly to slightly long I find

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 14:17

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow, you'd need to back that up with fact

You are arguing for the sake of it. My point was why the average hasn't gone up by much. The average now includes a lot more elderly people

The chances of a 20-yr old daughter being taller than her father is about 1/40

Elphame · 27/12/2021 14:58

I mean, on average, taller women will also be wider

Why? Plenty of tall women (including me) are slim. A few extra pounds actually make less difference to my size than they do to a shorter woman.

I'm now going to check out the teenage ranges!

FriendshipsAreHardForMe · 27/12/2021 15:05

I suspect it's because a size 4-6 woman is likely to be extremely short if in proportion. Most 5"4+ women will be size 8 upwards.

So size 4-6 will be made shorter for those women.

Age 14 clothes are for proportioned 14 year olds who are more likely going to be gangly still; thin and long.

You can't go by body shapes of kids. She likely won't stay gangly into adulthood. I was tall and skinny until 12 yrs, when I stopped growing and gained weight (to be expected). I'm now and average height for women and a slim to average build.

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 15:29

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow, that article does not say that each generation is taller than their parents

NeverForgetYourDreams · 27/12/2021 15:32

@germsandcoffee

My son got bought some super dry jeans for Christmas and they fit perfectly in the leg. Usually everything is too short or massive around the waist ! So I think I'm going to hunt out for super dry jeans in the sales to keep him clothed all year 🤣 (he's got a 28 inch waist and 34 inch legs so buy for him is a blooming nightmare.
Ooooo thanks for the tip. Our DS is also slim waist and long leg at 15 years old and it's hard to get long length with small waist in men's jeans
TeacupDrama · 27/12/2021 15:48

just checked New look sizes age 12-13 equates to 5'-5'2" but size 14-15 equates to 5'4-5'7" which is above average to above average height
While I know the average UK woman is about 5'4" I do not know what height the average 20 year old woman is but I suspect it is more than 5'4"

Uniqlo offer an alteration service, free on clothes over £20, and £3 for clothes less than £20. They do a great job, I’ve had lots of trousers etc shortened.

I used it a lot in 20s, until the advent of online shopping meant I could order lots of petite clothing.

backtolifebacktoreality · 27/12/2021 20:43

I HAVE THE ANSWER SmileMy friend's teenage daughter is a UK adult size 2 or 4. She's also 5ft 10in tall (most of that height is made up of very very long legs). She's obviously super slim but she eats well and is very sporty! If she wants something to fit her waist in a shop they send her to the petite section which is obviously no good as it's super short. Any trousers that are extra long generally start at a size 10 or 12. My friend has discovered that ASOS so an extra tall range starting at a size 4. It's been a huge help for school trousers and jeans!

GrannytoaUnicorn · 27/12/2021 22:08

If I had money, I'd start up a company that sold extra long tops for women. As a very large breasted woman, with a long torso I have to automatically ignore all tops and wear purely tunics!
