Did anyone else have a bloody lovely Christmas?

Since mumsnet has been sufficiently gloomy about Christmas to lead one poster to question whether the entire thing should just be cancelled outright, any positive stories to offer a counter view?

I had a bloody lovely day. Got to spend hours cuddling my beautiful baby nephew, who spent many weeks this year in hospital but is now out and doing brilliantly. Spent time with family who I missed desperately last year. Saw my son adored and cherished by my family. Got thoughtful, generous presents and had the joy of seeing people really appreciate and enjoy the things I gave them. Ate lovely food. Read my book by the fire. Walked on beautiful, snowy hills. Cuddled my childhood dog.

Anyone else?

We did, thanks. Had all my DC and their partners staying with us. Nice meal, great company, lots of board games and fun.

I'm always a bit sad when people apparently find Christmas stressful.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/12/2021 17:30

Lovely day, great presents, awesome food and wonderful company.

Am rather washed out and hungover today though.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 26/12/2021 17:30

Mine was lovely. We are Danish and Ds who is asd JOINED IN with the singing and dancing round the tree! At least for most of it. ☺

dreamingofsun · 26/12/2021 17:31

lucky you. alas no we didnt. was looking forward to spending time with DS1 this year as he was locked in London last, but he got covid. And DS3 also had it. So went from 7 down to 3 people for dinner and 1 that required room service. thanks whoever caused covid, you have ruined yet another christmas

Siezethefish · 26/12/2021 17:33

Stayed with my DF and my DM joined us from her care home Xmas day and Boxing Day. DP cooked 2 fabulous meals so I could spend time with them.

I have bottled in my heart the sight of them snuggled up on the sofa sleeping off their lunch. They are both in their 80s and got married in 1959. Now on the long drive home.

HunterGatherer · 26/12/2021 17:37

It's been unexpectedly gorgeous.

Sorry this happened, but this isn't the thread for your post.

We had a lovely day, spent it at MILs as first Christmas since FIL died. There was some sad moments he wasn’t here to enjoy seeing our DS grow up, but mostly fond memories, a gorgeous lunch cooked my lovely DH, nice presents and one very happy toddler running around being centre of attention. Finished off watching frozen in bed with DS and having a small Baileys. Really enjoyed it and extremely thankful covid didn’t ruin it for us.

wevemadeitagain · 26/12/2021 17:39

Love this thread, I’m grateful for a lovely couple of days too. Yesterday was busy but fun and best of all my lovely in laws cooked a cracking dinner and made the whole thing so relaxed. Boxing Day is usually my favourite day though. Just the four of us eating lovely food and enjoying the new toys. Even got to read my book for a bit and a short nap Xmas Smile

Bellafrenum · 26/12/2021 17:39

Yes! And still am. For me it is Christmas until 3rd Jan. Having a lovely time, today has been eating leftovers and playing games with the kids. Just what we all needed!

titanic25 · 26/12/2021 17:39

We fell out with in laws. So first time had a nice relaxed christmas at home with our children with no pressure of getting ready. Dh cooked meal by following Youtube videos. He never cooked before. It was nice not to have pressure on me. After meal went out for long walk and then had lovely nice hot pudding. Its first time i enjoyed christmas

TerraNovaTwo · 26/12/2021 17:40

Yes. It was lovely and peaceful.

SerendipitySunshine · 26/12/2021 17:47

Yes, very happy. Feel lucky to have my family over, very relaxed day, walked dogs, opened presents, made dinner and we played games afterwards. Feel very lucky to be pregnant and looking forward to welcoming a new life next year, so no wine, but a bit of Christmas magic.

ScouseQueen · 26/12/2021 17:48

Yes, was lovely. Nice day, presents all well received, tasty dinner, lots of relaxing! Family to see in the next few days. Really enjoying the breather today too after a busy year.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 26/12/2021 17:51

@Bellafrenum We sound like you, we have every intention of spreading the celebrations for a while.
It's the first time my dh has had time off over Christmas in the 23 years we have been together.
Have fun!Wine

AuntieMarys · 26/12/2021 17:55

Yes! No random people, no stress, ate out, did exactly what we wanted. Why wouldn't you?

scoobydoo1971 · 26/12/2021 18:03

I really enjoyed yesterday. I wasn't expecting to as it has been a very bad year for me. Family bereavement, personal health crisis of a very serious nature, big changes on the home front...but sat around the table with my kids and their Dad (we are not together but civil) was a nice moment to pause and focus on the future. Watched TV which I normally don't have time nor inclination for. I also made a decision to ditch my boyfriend who isn't making me happy. Many people are devastated by a break-up but for me it feels like one chapter closed, and another going to open up. Bring on 2022...

MonkeyGoneToHeaven · 26/12/2021 18:03

Yes, lovely. Six year old DS didn’t wake up until 8.15, loved his presents and was sweet and grateful.
We met some friends for a drink in the village pub, came home, had some champagne and then a really good lunch, lit the fire and played with DS’s toys and watched television until bedtime.
Sometimes it just works out nicely. My days of driving around trying to please everyone are very much over.

MissAmbrosia · 26/12/2021 18:07

Yes - had a lovely day. Pressies well received. Nice food. Facetime with the family. Nice and simple with no hassle.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/12/2021 18:10

I did.
Just my immediate family, ( DH and daughters) , but it was still fun, and very relaxed. I had lovely presents from friends and family, daughters were laughing together and everyone was happy. We have had a horrendous year so it was especially touching to have such a peaceful and joyful Christmas.

OldTinHat · 26/12/2021 18:12

The absolute best!

QueenLagertha · 26/12/2021 18:15

Yes. We had covid last Christmas. It was miserable. Lovely relaxed day this year at in laws. Only 7 of us. Minimal pressure. DS is nearly 4 and was so excited for Santa. He was so happy all day. Made our day 🥰

What a beautiful and poignant post. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely parents.
GhostofChristmasCheer · 26/12/2021 18:21

Yep. Lovely day just the four of us, we don’t do big family Christmases as it’s too much for the kids (autistic and find it overwhelming). We did what we wanted when we wanted. One stayed in pjs all day. One came to Christmas Day parkrun. Everyone liked their presents, which were just the right amount for once.

We had a nice roast dinner as there’s at least something in that everyone will eat. Ate a lot of chocolate and biscuits. Played a board game. Built Lego sets. People took time out when needed and nobody said “oh they should really join in”. And today has been more of the same. Tomorrow I think we’ll all need to go out for a walk. But right now I might have some cheese.

merryhouse · 26/12/2021 18:22

I saw several beloved relatives on Thursday; spent Friday at a Carol Service and in the company of delightful young men Choral Scholars; and heard a thoughtful sermon, received communion for the first time in 21 months, spent time with my babies grown-up sons, got some presents I wanted and had a delicious dinner on Saturday.

I've got away with drinking a little bit too much alcohol and have had lots of different Things To Eat. I watched Strictly and am looking forward to watching lovely David Around the World in 80 Days when we have a bit more untrammelled time.
