Overthinkingx3 · 26/12/2021 11:36

My kids love Joe Lycett

Innocuous TV but also radio
He’s funny and sweet and a little political

He is coming to our town for boys birthday . He will be 12, his siblings age 8 and 14

Would you take your kids ? I can’t check him out first … but the theatre guidance is 15

I would be ok with the 14 year old. Maybe the 12 year old if they were turning 13. Wouldn’t take the 8 year old.

Arethechildreninbedyet · 26/12/2021 11:38

As far as comedians go he’s certainly not the worst! I grew up watching Peter Kay every Friday night and suffered no adverse affects.

He’s a little more sordid on his live shows than on telly, there’s a couple on Netflix, watch them and see if it’s the calibre of comedy your son would like. If so book it. I don’t know if I’d take the eight year old though, I imagine a lot would go over his head.

toomuchlaundry · 26/12/2021 11:42

If the theatre guidance is 15 would they allow 8 year old in?

Hankunamatata · 26/12/2021 11:43

8 year old no. 12 year old iffy. Live shows tend to be more near the nuckle

Peter Kay is far more 'family friendly' I would have said
Nanny0gg · 26/12/2021 11:47

It's not that he's especially sweary, but he is a little bit...frank...for 8 year olds (and smutty imo. I do like him though)

HeadToToesNo · 26/12/2021 11:49

I love him, and have seen him a few times and there isn't a fucking chance I'd take an 8 year old.

RitaFires · 26/12/2021 11:52

I always associate Joe Lycett with the joke "To find out your dirty prostitute name take your mother's last name and put her first name in front of it". I don't think he's suitable for anyone not in their teens but check out some of his live stuff on YouTube to get a sense of the comedy he uses in live shows.

Onthegrid · 26/12/2021 11:53

I’ve seen many ‘TV’ comedians live on tour and they are not suitable for under 16s.

maffhew · 26/12/2021 11:59

If theatre guidance is 15 then what makes you think you'll be able to turn up with young kids?

Presumably you don't follow him on Instagram or you'd see how unsuitable it would be for an 8 year old.

I'm a huge fan and took my teenager to his show but it's an adult comedy show not panto.

Overthinkingx3 · 26/12/2021 12:04

Thanks folks

I only know him from radio 4 and his Ch4 specials taking down big corporations like Shell

I didn’t realise he was rude and that seems so odd given our experience of him to date . Am not good at Insta / YouTube - thanks for the hints

I've got a 13 year old who watches all 15 films and I don't mind sex references/jokes but I don't think I'd take her even though she adores him as he's just a bit too crude - have a look at his social media and see what you think.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 26/12/2021 12:10

It’s a surprise to you that comedians tone it down for mainstream television and radio?

Hellocatshome · 26/12/2021 12:11

Comedians live generally aim their acts at an adult audience and an audience who appreciate their type of comedy. Whereas on TV they have to keep things more generally acceptable even if they are on after 9. I would possibly the 14 year old but not the others.

FizzyTango · 26/12/2021 12:39

I think he’s great - but deffo not appropriate for children!

BillMasheen · 26/12/2021 12:39

I used to work in a comedy club, (bar staff, not the star turn) and we did have quite a few tv acts.

The bigger names used to attract a crowd who weren’t used to live comedy. The shock among the audience when they inevitably started on the NSFTV stuff was palpable. Live comedy is a very different beast, even if someone has a pre —watershed act on tv and radio.

Overthinkingx3 · 26/12/2021 19:03

Thanks all

My phone is now throwing comedians at me

Sara Pascoe … what she like ?
We love Infinite Monkey cage and her shows on evolutionary psychology
Even if there is a lot references to sexual selection

Would she be ok ?

Sara Pascoe … what she like ?

Very funny, intelligent and thought provoking. Certainly not the sort of thing we want our children being exposed to ....

BrightYellowDaffodil · 26/12/2021 19:08

TBH OP, I don’t think you’re going to find comedians are suitable for children/young teens unless it’s specifically marked as a “family friendly” show. Most comedians are very different live to how they are on TV, and there is almost always “adult” content which is not going to be suitable.

NuffSaidSam · 26/12/2021 19:10

I'd go with the theatre guidance. They won't let you take younger children in, so just stick to the age limit they set.

I think there are very few comedians (outside of special kids shows) that it would be ok to take an 8 year old to see tbh.

ScurrilousSquirrel · 26/12/2021 21:05

I've been to a couple of live shows where parents brought teens to see comedians who had been on the telly. One comedian made an absolute exhibition out of the 14 year old and the mother's body language screamed regret. The other one made some jokes that would likely have led to some uncomfortable questions in the car on the way home.

Also, if you're this naive, are you sure you'd get the jokes Wink

Honestly, I don’t think there would be any stand up comedian that would be appropriate to take an 8 year old to. It’s not even to do with language, it’s just that they are adult entertainers aiming their content at adults. I just can’t see how an 8 year old would enjoy that.
icedcoffees · 26/12/2021 21:43

I think 8yo is far too young for any kind stand-up - I'm honestly surprised you're even considering it.

In fact, all the shows I've been to have said you need to be 14yo to attend - that includes pretty tame stuff like Michael McIntyre and Bill Bailey.

For the 14yo I would say the above two would be appropriate, plus maybe someone like Russell Howard.

Sarah Pascoe is great but also not suitable for an 8 year old. She has a podcast called sex power money where she examines sex work through a feminist perspective and she references this. She also talks a lot about her various sexual partners and previous drug use / party lifestyle.

Honestly live comedy isn’t really for an 8 year old

ShirleyBadass · 26/12/2021 21:50

I've been in the audience before at a Jimmy Carr show and he spotted a young kid with his parents. After ripping them for it, he told them that it wasn't suitable, that they should leave and he would refund their tickets.

Joe Lycett is fab, but seeing the language he uses on his garden updates on Instagram, I wouldn't take my 8 year old! (Worth checking out!)
