In Bed with Madonna - Film & Rape

Just watching this again on bbc. It came out when I was 10 and I grew up loving Madonna.

Just watched a scene where someone tells Madonna that her hairstylist Sharon (overweight and mocked by Madonna) may've been drugged and raped (annually) by some men and Madonna just laughs

She then says "all I can think of is that she told those guys she was on tour with me and they decided to f**k with her"

And that's it.

I definitely don't remember this scene when I first watched this years ago but were things so different in 1990 that this scene was okay and okay to not be edited out the movie? Did Madonna think rape was funny?

Anyone else remember this scene?

I remember it.

There are many things that Madonna is known for. Being a decent human being is not one of them.

Hapoydayz · 25/12/2021 23:57

Yes I remember that it was shocking at the time

Yutes · 25/12/2021 23:57

Wasn’t Madonna, herself, a victim of rape?

Yutes · 25/12/2021 23:58

Not saying any comment is ok, but I think I remember reading somewhere that that was the case.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 26/12/2021 00:01

Yes, I remember that.
Madonna was never a supporter of other women, to say the least.
Glad she's over.

It doesn't appear the case was ever progressed whether the police were called or any help given at all to the victim. Madonna seems to make it about her and victim blaming

I can imagine Madonna previewed and agreed the movie before release and yet she still left this scene in.

I watched this the other day and couldn't believe it. Why is this not being picked up on by women's rights me too and all other organisations it is absolutely disgusting behaviour obviously we don't know the true story but for an employer to laugh, dismiss it as unimportant and show no concern or care whatsoever is quite shocking.

SoniaFouler · 26/12/2021 00:15

Yes, I remember this scene.

And yes, Madonna did review this scene. It was premiered at her (then boyfriend) Warren Beatty’s house and he was angry with a few of the scenes and argued with her and forced her to remove them. So she definitely greenlit that scene. She also told the same woman that she used to beat up girls like her at school and would have beat her up too.

GatoradeMeBitch · 26/12/2021 00:16

I was shocked by that too. The obviously concerned male dancer tells Madonna that her hairstylist came round from being unconscious and discovered her bum was bleeding, and Madonna just laughed, and then said she was sorry for laughing while still smirking.

Why did she even think to include that? Even then she must have known it was going to make her look like a horrible person.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 26/12/2021 00:26

She also frequently uses a derogatory term for gay men on several occasions. This film does not show her in a good light at all.

LittleRoundRobin · 26/12/2021 00:28

It was 30 years ago. Confused

GaolBhoAlba · 26/12/2021 00:30

It was 30 years ago, and a (horrific) snapshot of why people like Harvey Weinstein were able to behave as they did for so long - it was just 'accepted' (by everyone, not just Madonna, no one suggested professional support/calling the police) that that sort of thing happened to women.

I saw it when it first came out and although I loved her she isn't a particularly warm or caring person. This was at the height of her fame when she was very driven and ambitious and my take on her response is that she just didn't have time for the drama.

I can imagine being that famous brings a certain level of distrust which came across in her response to the claims made by the hairdresser. None of this is ok, but just an explanation.

A bit like Margaret Thatcher, I don't think Madonna has much time for women.
