Feeling a bit blue, all alone on Christmas night and contemplating walking the dog, as that always helps my mood. Would you?

I go this time most nights! It’s lovely in the winter when everyone’s houses look all cozy and you can have a nosey! We live in a small, rural village without much street lighting. I feel safe.
Nothing like a good dog walk to lift the spirits.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 25/12/2021 21:44

With my old dog, absolutely no way. He was soft as butter. Current dog- I reckon she’d give any ne’er do well short shrift. But I still don’t think I’d risk it round here.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 25/12/2021 21:46

As well as the fact my girls is usually zonked on the sofa from about 8pm Grin

madisonbridges · 25/12/2021 21:49

Mine's a little dog and a useless protector but I'd feel very safe walking where I live. I often take him for a walk at midnight before we go to bed.

LawnFever · 25/12/2021 21:50

Yes I’d walk my dog alone or walk home alone at any time where I live.

Bettysnow · 25/12/2021 21:51

Yes without hesitating. Mind you mines is 55kg German Shepherd so have never had anyone approach me thankfully

Grimchmas · 25/12/2021 21:51

My dog is um, not intimidating. I live on a very quiet road and I walk her on my road late at night but not much further.

misssunshine4040 · 25/12/2021 21:58

My dog is a large intimidating looking American Bulldog (she's the softest girl ever) and she makes me feel safe enough to walk late around my city streets with her

HippeePrincess · 25/12/2021 22:01

My dog often barks at people in the dark so even though she’s soft as shit and probably useless I think she’d be a bit of a deterrent. I’ve walked her around here at all sorts of times of night, usually only meet other dog walkers and groups of teens. It’s not a great area but I don’t feel unsafe at any time here.

cheesecadet · 25/12/2021 22:03

I've been! Wow never expected so many replies. While I was out I was thinking what a strange and random question it was, but I've had a few beverages! I've had a really crap week actually, a relationship breakdown, and have a cold too so I needed to get out. My dog is lucky to get an extra walk!

It was so quiet everywhere, got a bit wet, but I don't mind that. Had a nosy into people's houses, like someone else mentioned!

It's funny the comments regarding what their dogs would do in an attack. I'm still unsure but mine just barked at a lit up xmas tree in a garden! Mine is a big softie really but has a bit of jack russell in him so he can be a little shit!

Thank you for the comments. My ears are more blocked after that but I feel mentally better!

Yes if its a large dog that looks like it could take a would be attackers face off!!

FrangipaniBlue · 25/12/2021 22:09

I know what mine would do....

a few week back I was walking him at about 7pm in the dark and 2 dodgy looking characters deliberately changed direction and started crossing a road towards me.

FrangipaniDog lost his shit, said dodgy characters hesitated then retreated 😂😂😂

(He's a 30kg bull terrier so definitely not to be messed with!)

rhowton · 25/12/2021 22:12

It would be fine where I am.

shinynewapple21 · 25/12/2021 22:15

As long as it's not raining I've been enjoying taking dog out in the evening and looking at people's Christmas lights. Not a long walk,
Just round the block .

user1497787065 · 25/12/2021 22:34

Safe area with regard to crime but rural, no pavements or streetlights, single lane roads so my answer is no I don't walk my dog in the dark.

HunterGatherer · 25/12/2021 22:36

I didn't think twice about it for years, then a few months ago a neighbour in our quiet village got attacked and her dog was stolen Sad since then I always walk our dog with another family member if it's dark.

WonderfulYou · 25/12/2021 23:03

My dog is massive and very intimidating but she is a massive wimp so I doubt she’ll ever protect me lol.

I would happily walk around a busy area not even with people, just with houses around but I don’t like if it’s too rural.

MrsTimRiggins · 25/12/2021 23:08

Safe as houses but I do live on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Plus while the dog I would actually be walking is not a tough looking thing, we get escorted about by the two working dogs, huntaways… you’d be a very stupid person to go against one of those.

oviraptor21 · 25/12/2021 23:09

Semi rural here so not really safe no matter how low the crime rate.
If I lived in a town then probably OK on the busier roads.

pigsDOfly · 25/12/2021 23:16

Safe area but no street lights, fairly rural and lonely so no I wouldn't walk her in the dark later than about 6.30, particularly tonight as it's pouring with rain and extremely cold.

Dog is small, has a great fondness for people and tends to wag her tail wildly if anyone stops to talk so I can't imagine she'd be much help if someone tried to mug me.

foxlover47 · 25/12/2021 23:16

I would but I have 3 and they bark at strangers if they come too
Close so always feel ok at night with them

gukvguk · 25/12/2021 23:33

Absolutely safe. Biggest risk are the uneven pavements!

JohnSmithDrive · 25/12/2021 23:38

I dot have a dog, but if I needed/wanted to get somewhere at 9pm, I'd walk on my own.

Nowayoutonlydown · 26/12/2021 00:17

I've a 38kg boxer, who loves nothing in this world more than his mum, so there isn't a time I wouldn't walk him in my area- it's fairly safe, there have been a string of attempted sex attacks, but the dogs quite off-putting, plus there are ring doorbells on most houses on the estate I live on, I just think I would be safe.

JaceLancs · 26/12/2021 00:20

Raining here and I don’t have a dog - but I live in a quiet village and feel perfectly safe walking alone even at night
