Dinner disaster help! Cooker broke

Nc for this plus posting here for traffic

Aibu to ask for help to rescue my dinner?

It seems my oven has broken, I had an issue yesterday with it but thought I may have left the food in too long and dismissed as human error

Today was trying to make Xmas dinner and everything is cremated! Roast potatoes are JUST about salvageable but the rest…

I am hoping I can cook stuffing on the hob somehow? Fry it?

I’d also like to know if anyone has ever had this happen with their oven?

Obviously I won’t be able to get hold of anyone until at least Monday I’m thinking the thermostat has broken? Basically it’s heating up way too quickly and far hotter than usual I even turned it down from usual temp setting and still this has happened 2 days in a row!

Help!

Ours has died too (thermostat is dead and can’t be repaired so need the landlord to ok a replacement).

We do stuffing in the microwave (just a box of paxo so nothing special) and had to use a combination of slow cooker and bench top convection oven to roast the meats.

We didn’t have any roast potatoes or parsnips and I cried a lot (and drank lots of gin).

I hope you can get something sorted out.

I think anything with gravy on too is passable ! Mind you I don't have high standards Grin

XmasDinnerStress · 25/12/2021 20:46

Tears here too at least it’s only me! No microwave unfortunately reckon I can fry frozen yorkies?

Our thermostat has broken on our oven too - it’s either on at max temp (and beyond!) or off. We get round it by switching it on for a bit, then off to let the temp drop, then back on again.

XmasDinnerStress · 25/12/2021 20:48

Gravy will hopefully help. This really sucks! On my own as dc at exes this year could really have done without this it was the one thing I had to look forward to

@MuchTooTired thanks for the camaraderie and a possible tip to use too this is maddening!

How long has yours been like that are you unable to get it fixed ?

If you let the oven heat up a bit, you can put the yorkshires (assuming they aren't the frozen batter variety) into the oven straight onto the rack, close the door and turn it off - they'll heat through perfectly in the residual.

Stuffing can be done in a pan - thick layer/burger size, medium heat (or low if there's sausagemeat in it) and it'll firm up and get crispy on the outside.

Other items all possible in a pan - even roasties if you have a wok or deep saucepan and the patience to keep moving them around in a tiny amount of hot fat. If you cut them smaller, it'll be easier. Although we do them in an oven like yours without much trouble.

It'll be fine. And it makes you really appreciate it when you get a replacement oven.

PartyPrawnRingGames · 25/12/2021 20:59

Oh no! Well if it's just for you you can fry anything that goes on a Christmas dinner cut into the right size to fry evenly or make things like stuffing into balls and fry, and some of it could go in the microwave if you have one.

XmasDinnerStress · 25/12/2021 21:18

I’ve got turkey slice type things (cold cut style) gravy will hopefully rescue it mostly

@NeverDropYourMooncup thank you so much I will bear all that in mind I’m not even trying yorkies tonight but might do that tomorrow if I dare!

Stuffing I cut the burnt tops off then fried on hob had a wee taste actually quite nice

Those of you with similar issues can I ask what brand of oven? Not that I can think what mine is! I’ll check later

Is it always irreparable when this happens? I can’t afford a new cooker right now!

For mine, it would be cheaper to buy a new oven than have the thermostat replaced.

We'll get around to it in the end, but so far, we've been cooking with an oven that is either off or hotter than the surface of the sun for seven years.

MaitlandGirl · 25/12/2021 22:25

Ours is a crappy Euromaid (came with the house) and even though it’s only 7 years old, it’s obsolete and the electrician can’t get spare parts :(

We’re desperately hoping the landlord agrees a quick replacement but it’ll still be the middle of January before we can get a new one fitted.

XmasDinnerStress · 25/12/2021 22:54

@NeverDropYourMooncup I was afraid you'd say that!

@MaitlandGirl mines not even 5 years old!

It's a cheapy Currys one I'm not wanting to buy another as I'm hoping to move very soon and I may not be able to take own cooker with me so it'll be a massive waste of money! Can't leave it here either

Arghhh

Really don't need this! I know who does!

@XmasDinnerStress ours has been broken for at least a couple of months. Took us an age to figure out it was broken though, as we normally use the air fryer to cook!
