AIBU to expect staff on delicatessen counters to wear masks, not lanyards?

Exactly that. If you can’t wear a mask, you should stack shelves or work in the till behind a screen, not on a delicatessen or sandwich counter. Your aerosols are just as potentially dangerous as mine and they’re falling on my cooked meat or cheese etc. Don’t complain if I ask for a masked server.

YABU. Get a grip.

tillyandmilly · 24/12/2021 22:58

I agree anyway with wearing a mouth covering when serving behind deli counters! Not just during covid !

MadameMinimes · 24/12/2021 22:58

YABU.

They aren’t breaking any rules and the risk is minuscule. Just buy your cheese and cooked meat pre-packaged if it bothers you.

CovidCorvid · 24/12/2021 23:00

But you weren’t worried about “aerosols” from non masked people landing on your food before covid. Because people don’t cough/sneeze over the food. You are not going to catch covid from someone breathing in the vicinity of your ham.

If your anxiety is so bad get the pre packed stuff.

Westerman · 24/12/2021 23:00

Are you one of the people who think vaccination should be compulsory, too?
The staff in shops aren't allowed to complain about unmasked customers so why should it be ok for you yo demand someone wearing a mask. You might even be discriminatory if that member of staff can't wear a mask for disability related reasons.

sjxoxo · 24/12/2021 23:03

I think you can’t insist they wear masks if exempt, but you can chose to shop elsewhere! I hate it when there’s no hairnets gloves etc at deli counters too, covid or no covid! Xo

Brieandcamembert · 24/12/2021 23:03

I don't understand the narrative of the poor people that don't want to wear masks should still be allowed hear the food. Shall we give surgeons special dispensation not to wear them too if they find them a bit uncomfortable?

WouldBeGood · 24/12/2021 23:04

Insane

3cats4poniesandababy · 24/12/2021 23:06

If they were coughing over your food fair enough anything else YABU.
Maybe you should just make your sandwich at home with that attitude?

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 24/12/2021 23:07

yabu

if they work on that counter then thats where they stay!

you dont get to dictate they work on the tills!! how ridiculous. and how nasty that you could make a mask exempt staff member feel ashamed.

DaisyNGO · 24/12/2021 23:08

OP "Don’t complain if I ask for a masked server."

But the unmasked server has already, in your view, breathed dangerously on the food.

Don't complain if they tell you to shop elsewhere.

I hate it when they do wear gloves. It is far more hygienic to wash your hands. They are not replacing gloves as regularly as they would be washing hands and avoids more contamination.
Keeping2ChevronsApart · 24/12/2021 23:10

Sorry but I agree with the OP. Every supermarket has posters up saying 'you must wear a mask, protect our staff' yet rarely do I see staff wearing one themselves

HeddaGarbled · 24/12/2021 23:12

You don’t catch COVID from eating food. You catch it from breathing contaminated air.

AnnaSW1 · 24/12/2021 23:14

Yea YABU. If they're exempt they're exempt

Essemce · 24/12/2021 23:14
Biscuit
ilovesooty · 24/12/2021 23:15

I agree with the OP, in that I don't think it's an area that unmasked employees should be working in. I'd shop elsewhere.

DrManhattan · 24/12/2021 23:16

Aren't lanyards worn by people who are exempt from wearing a mask? Don't be mean

Maelstrom23 · 24/12/2021 23:17

Yes but @DrManhattan, the point is the exempt shop worker could work elsewhere in the shop.
I agree with OP.

chiefcha · 24/12/2021 23:18

I agree OP. If they're exempt, the supermarket should find them something else to do.

WouldBeGood · 24/12/2021 23:18

Do you really think you’ll get Covid off your naice ham?

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 24/12/2021 23:24

@Maelstrom23

Yes but *@DrManhattan*, the point is the exempt shop worker could work elsewhere in the shop. I agree with OP.
no not necessarily...thats not true of my store.
LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 24/12/2021 23:25

@chiefcha

I agree OP. If they're exempt, the supermarket should find them something else to do.
you are not allowed to discriminate like that! many without masks have disabilities.

I wouldn't be able to understand a thing they said if they covered their mouth and stood several foot back (as they're behind the counter) and the counter glass is between us, as I've lost all the sounds I can hear and the ability to lipread that way.

They're not directly over the food, they're behind it; it's only their clean hands and arm that goes over the food and it's then cut - which you don't do with your face over the cutting equipment - and wrapped.
