I have (diagnosed) severe OCD and emetophobia (vomit phobia) so this is a nightmare. We are staying in a holiday rental and I set the fridge to 2 degrees but someone turned it down to 'super' when the fresh turkey and pigs in blankets arrived yesterday morning, which frustratingly turns it up a lot.
I've been really busy and only just found out now. Items from the fridge don't feel cold and a meat thermometer is reading the air temperature at 9.5ish. I am so worried about food poisoning :-(

The rest of the family are not willing to forego our Christmas Dinner (I'm living with family so it's not my call to make and don't have kids of my own) but I think I'll avoid eating it. How likely do you think it is that everyone is going to get sick?

@Flowersandhearts

Thank you everyone for your replies :-) .

Thanks for the supportive ones- OCD is a horrble illness and I'm really sorry some of you are struggling with this too. I have had lots of CBT, including a 3 month stay in hospital and my condition has ruined my life so I really appreciate the empathy.

Thanks to everyone else for their perspectives too, its really helpful to hear from people who don't have OCD and who would have different approaches to the situation.

I think I will just let everyone else eat it and have lots of crisps and drinks.
I

You can still eat all the vegetables, though? The only 'risky' ingredients would be raw meat. And I would think that the meat was well wrapped in any case.

You don't have to stick to packets of crisps.

Have a lovely Christmas OP Flowers

@SimonedeBeauvoirscat

I would stop freaking out, turn the fridge temperature down, take out any nonessential stuff and leave it closed for the rest of the evening.
This. Just cook it thoroughly, and any bacteria that has grown will be killed off.

Happy Christmas @Flowersandhearts if you eat crisps and cheese and bread all day tomorrow then so what? It will be fine. Do your best. Retreat if you get stressed. Be kind to yourself.

@WrongWayApricot I think you missed my previous post.

Flowersandhearts · 25/12/2021 02:20

Thanks again. I'm still so anxious about it and a bit disappointed about not feeling able to eat Christmas Dinner tomorrow!

Why would you just have crisps and drinks? Unless your family are only eating meat like a pack of wolves for the next few days I’m sure there must be some roast veg etc as well!?

Fizzorgin · 25/12/2021 02:28

Stick it in the oven now and cook it low and slow if you're worried - I always used to do my turkey overnight when I was catering Christmas for family bunged it in the oven about about midnight then took it out around 7/7:30 in the morning as it meant I then had oven space for everything else and the turkey was still lovely and moist.

The cat used to have eyes like saucers and be clamouring for the bacon off the top cos of the smell in the morning mind you Grin

What's wrong with the vegetables?

@gluteustothemaximus

The frustrating thing is that this is an objective food safety issue

Not really OP. It's not OCD that's the issue here. The temp that bacteria can grow is between 5-65 which is why fridges operate at below 5.

Not objective, but fact. It's other people's lack of food safety hygiene causing this upset, not your OCD.

Thank you, yes that's what I mean an objective factual food hygiene issue rather than just my disorder.
