Boxing Day is the best day of the year!

Don’t get me wrong - I love Christmas. But Boxing Day is the best day because:

  1. All the Christmas Day stress is over
  2. But it’s still Christmas
  3. And you can just relax, eat nice food and enjoy your presents

YANBU - Boxing Day is where it’s at baby
YABU - stop being such a grinch, there’s nothing better than Christmas Day!

Boxing Day is definitely the best day. We usually have a day out at a big sporting event, horse racing or rugby. It’s a great way of getting away from the blood telly and avoiding the hellhole of the sales.

labazslovesliving · 24/12/2021 14:52

even though it's just me and DP at Christmas I find Christmas Eve very stressful; worrying about what presents I have bought and if they are right; hoping Amazon Prime delivery turns up with last-minute things; wondering if I got the right bits of food for us to eat.
Christmas day is bittersweet; we go out for a meal last year it was sitting in silence our relationship is not very good since his mother died 18 months ago my partner has changed and I am considering leaving after 8 years then we have to see his dad in a nursing home. he has bad dementia and you never know what he will be like when we visit.
Boxing day I am looking forward to; firstly to take a wreath to mum and dads grave then onto my daughters to see the grandkids exchange presents have a good natter just a good time
be nice to abolish Christmas!

Lovesplasticstraws · 24/12/2021 14:56

Boxing Day/ St Stephen's Day fan here. I love that the pressure is off and can finally relax. As a child didn't like a Sunday Boxing Day as had to go to church 2 days in a row.

onedayoranother · 24/12/2021 15:29

Except we eat Christmas dinner after 4pm and I only do a cursory tidy up, so there's a lot more to do on Boxing Day! Plus my son has to leave the next day so I'm cooking a roast. I like Christmas Day as other than cooking and eating, presents and a game there's no expectation to do more. No one thinking they should be doing homework or meeting up with mates (I have teens). It's family and the routine is pretty much set. I think on Boxing Day there will be a bit of restlessness.

Derrymum123 · 24/12/2021 15:38

Absolutely. Nowhere to be, nobody to entertain. Just snack and watch whatever you want. Lovely chilled out day.

Laiste · 24/12/2021 15:41

LOVE Boxing Day.

Xmas Eve = reaches peak '9 people are relying on me for a fabulous xmas day' Shock Lists and lists of stuff to do/remember ...

Xmas Day =
morning: lovely bit where DD opens her stocking and then aaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhh
Adhere To The Schedule And Dinner Should Be OK
afternoon: chill a bit, opening presents, which is nice, then a bit more aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggghhhhh doing evening drinks and nibbles for 9.

Boxing Day =
you can all eat what you like, wear what you like and do what you like it aint nothin' to do with me Grin

(day after boxing day - loooong drive to inlaw's 'big noisy do' so stress ramps back up)

Bunnycat101 · 24/12/2021 16:08

Love Boxing Day. I’ve been running around like mad today cleaning and picking stuff up and still haven’t done any wrapping. I’m knackered and the kids have been fractious and over emotional. Bring on tomorrow and then Boxing Day when I can do bugger all.

RaininSummer · 24/12/2021 16:47

Yes love boxing day as more relaxed. Have spent most of today cooking and prepping stuff. Tomorrow is cooking and hosting. I do like it and don't have to cook if I don't want to but boxing day just involves eating lots of leftovers.

NOELnoelNOELnoel · 24/12/2021 16:50

We do the staying at home in our Pj's on Xmas day.

Boxing day is the busy day visiting the family for us.

So nope, I don't enjoy boxing day.

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/12/2021 16:52

I dont like boxing day, all the presents are done and the fun is over! I feel like a fat lump.

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/12/2021 16:52

We try and keep Christmas day relaxed with the cooking done before so it's fun time

Stellaris22 · 24/12/2021 16:54

We always go for a long walk on Boxing Day, in the same place. I love this tradition.

Nacknick · 24/12/2021 22:30

@Laiste you’ve nailed it, that’s exactly how I feel about it!

I love Christmas eve. I do enjoy boxing day but I feel like it's too close to the "getting back to normal"

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 24/12/2021 22:57

There's a lot of us these days I have 4 dc, Mt dsis has 3 dc and ds1 also has 3 dc as well as us having parents/grandparents so we always get together boxing day. Love it!

FatOaf · 24/12/2021 23:01

Boxing Day lunch of cold meats with bubble & squeak and pickles is a highlight of my year.

One more thing that mumsnetters who "don't do leftovers" will never understand.

LittleRoundRobin · 24/12/2021 23:01

I can't vote because I don't agree Boxing Day is the best, but Christmas day isn't either. It's Christmas Eve for me.

LubaLuca · 24/12/2021 23:05

I was saying this earlier. I'll definitely enjoy the days after Christmas more than I'll enjoy tomorrow (which is always a bit of an anticlimax).

I prefer bubble & squeak on Boxing Day to Xmas dinner as well Shock

Hotcuppatea · 24/12/2021 23:08

YABU. Easter is the best day.

Family together, big roast dinner, lovely wine, chocolate AND the weather is lighter and brighter, there's no hideous run up to it, no expensive presents to buy and no stoopid traditions to observe.

Nat6999 · 24/12/2021 23:11

Ds goes to his dad's so me & my mum are just going to graze all day, keep dipping in the fridge for anything we fancy.

TomAllenWife · 24/12/2021 23:11

Totally agree, me & dd spend the day in bed watching crap tv or films
I make proper chips and we have it with ham, turkey, pods in blankets, piccalilli, red cabbage etc
We take it up to bed, drink wine, eat trifle

The best bit is taking the decorations down about 8pm Grin

justasking111 · 24/12/2021 23:18

Boxing Day is relaxing you get time to play with the toys build that Lego castle, no cooking. Go for a walk. Stress free with no guests

JaceLancs · 24/12/2021 23:21

Xmas eve is the best - we always have a big family get together - buffet cocktail night - Xmas day everyone is with their own smaller family units - I’m always driving around to see people so can’t even have a drink

Yellownotblue · 24/12/2021 23:23

Christmas Eve’s Eve and Christmas Eve are the best.

Christmas Eve’s Eve is known here as The Day of Anticipating the Day of Anticipation. Aka Festivus (for Seinfeld fans) and we usually pay homage to that by having a rumble with the kids.

We celebrate Christmas in the continental tradition, so the Christmas Eve dinner is a big deal. Once that’s over, we do stockings and new Christmas pyjamas, and by the time the kitchen is clean, all my Christmas food is done and I’m officially on holidays. We are now going to eat meat pies (which I made ahead and are in the freezer) and left overs until the 27th. Tomorrow is a completely laid back affair. On Boxing Day I’ll be starting my jigsaw puzzle.

ScouseQueen · 24/12/2021 23:27

@Derrymum123

Absolutely. Nowhere to be, nobody to entertain. Just snack and watch whatever you want. Lovely chilled out day.
This! Bloody love Boxing Day for all these reasons. And you can have a lie in to make up for the Christmas Day early start.
