AIBU - Letting agents fitting induction hob

I've been away, whilst I was away the letting agents have come to fit a new hob as one of the rings on our electric one was tripping the house out.

So I've got back, it won't work, turns out it's a bloody induction hob. So now all 10 pans I have here in the house are now useless. It's Xmas eve today, how in the hell am I meant to be cooking Christmas dinner.

I've rang them to complain and tell them either they're to provide/pay for the new pans or they're to change it back to a regular electric hob I had before. They seem to think it's not much of an issue and that somebody will call me before the new year.

AIBU to be pissed off here?

Well they're not going to do that today Sad

I'd be FURIOUS

A fix for Christmas dinner is to make your pans 'heavier' - I bought a light frying pan from ikea I couldn't use so I weighed it down with a tin of beans and had the food cooking around it - I only did it once Grinwith frying eggs before I got a new pan

SantaMonicaPier · 24/12/2021 10:40

That's awful. I think the owners probably have the right to select fixed appliances especially as induction seem to be most popular now but awful you didn't know in advance and right before Christmas. If the property was advertised with an electric hob you could use that as grounds to complain perhaps.

mommal20 · 24/12/2021 10:40

I'm thinking to go out today and buy a new set of the proper pans and ask them to give me the money but I'm so annoyed. Shopping round for a pan set on Xmas eve is not what I want to be bloody doing! Sad

Sainsburys do pans that work on all hobs if that helps and you have one near you. You could just buy a couple - they are not expensive.

It is outrageous they didn't warn you though.

AnotherForumUser · 24/12/2021 10:46

Don't know if you can find one in time for Christmas but convertor discs are a cheap and effective way of using normal pans on induction hobs. Cookware shops often have them and I guess Amazon might.

Dessicator · 24/12/2021 10:51

You can buy a plate which sits on the hob and your panssit on top of it, so you can use sny pan. We have a small one for a Bialletti coffee maker. Not sure where you may get one at such short notice. Possibly specialist cooking shop.

Coldilox · 24/12/2021 10:54

Scoville Neverstick pans are amazing, and can be used on any job including induction. Stocked in Asda.

ShinySquirrel · 24/12/2021 10:56

If they did that to me, I'd go fucking spare. I have a pacemaker so I can't use induction hobs as they interfere with it.

ChequerBoard · 24/12/2021 11:08

@ShinySquirrel

If they did that to me, I'd go fucking spare. I have a pacemaker so I can't use induction hobs as they interfere with it.

My DH also has a pacemaker so we have just had to avoid induction for our new kitchen.

But I wouldn't expect a landlord to avoid induction for this reason, it's pretty niche. Induction jobs are everywhere, we found it quite hard to get a decent brand large job that wasn't induction.

They probably think they have done a nice thing, giving you a good quality hob.

Annoying about the pans, but easy to pop out today and get a couple of new ones to tide you over.

I agree they're great pans
mommal20 · 24/12/2021 11:12

Thanks all, will have to go and get hold of some. Any other time it wouldn't be so bad but bloody Christmas Eve Hmm

Just wish they'd have warned me in advance!

I know it's a pain but induction hobs are awesome!

Just be aware that they are much quicker to boil than electric hobs. Keep an eye on things to make sure they don't boil over. If they do though you can just lift the pan and wipe it up. Soooo easy to clean.

CodenameEgg · 24/12/2021 11:44

I'd suggest Ikea pans every time but they are closed on Christmas Eve.

Dahliasrule · 24/12/2021 11:49

Second what Twizbe said though the situation is an absolute pain for you you will enjoy cooking on it.
We got the induction hob and I have since had a pacemaker fitted. DH now has to do all the hob cooking Grin.

80sMum · 24/12/2021 11:53

They should have let you know well in advance. That would have given you time to request a different hob (if for example you can't use induction for medical reasons) or buy some new pans.
