Sorry to be posting on AIBU but thought I might get a quicker response here.

I woke up this morning around 2am with my bedroom spinning and feeling like I was going to fall off my bed.
Managed to get back to sleep but woke at 6:30 with my toddler and I could barely stand up. Instantly felt very sick, and stumbling all over the place.
i sent my toddler to her Grandmas and attended a hospital appointment as I had an urgent scan I needed to attend. Passed out in the waiting room from the dizziness.
I went home, took some betahistine that I had in my cupboards from a dizzy spell beginning of this year that I had due to an ear infection, and went to bed, waking in the afternoon feeling much worse. I rang 111 and they sent me to the walk in centre-they were very good, checked my ears, normal obs etc and said I have BPPV(?) and prescribed more betahistine. They warned me I might feel a bit off it for the next week or so and that if the dizziness worsens and becomes debilitating again, go to a&e to get another check over.

I’m definitely feeling a bit better than earlier but I am very scared about it happening again and not being able to look after my toddler (15months). I also have a fear of sick so that doesn’t help. She is with me most the time but goes to her dads a few nights a week so I do get that break in between but I don’t want to have to keep asking them to help as I don’t want to seem like an unfit mum.

Anyway my question is has anyone ever had it and what advise do you have for managing it?

Thank you and sorry again for the AIBU

There are some head position moves you can do that might help? Google epley maneuvre I think? Or bppv maneuvre for instructions. Sympathy though, it's so unpleasant.

Dellow · 23/12/2021 22:08

Vitamin K2. if you don’t have enough of this vitamin, calcium can accumulate in places it shouldn’t eg crystals in the ear canals. This can be a contributing factor to bppv. I take this regularly with vitamin d3. I’m not saying this the is only cause or a definite answer but it has worked for me and many others. Bppv is horrendous & I hope you find an answer quickly!

PlayerOneReady · 23/12/2021 22:08

You need to find a physio that can do the positional work mentioned above. Apparently it solves it instantly. Are you in London? If so i can recommend someone

PumpkinSpicedLatte · 23/12/2021 22:10

Thank you for your quick responses. @Dellow is there a particular brand you can recommend? My diet has been awful recently to be honest so I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m lacking.

@PlayerOneReady unfortunately I am not in london, no, thank you though!

See if you can find someone locally who does it. BPPV is horrible and I send you all my sympathy.

TheHoptimist · 23/12/2021 22:16

You need the epley done- any adult can do it following YouTube videos but works 1st time with a professional. My DH often has to have a few goes over several days

Drugs are usually not advised. My consultant went ballistic when my GP prescribed a drug rather than referring me to him for the Epley as he said in my case it could actually cause damage. The pharmacist also told me not to take them without double checking when prescribing which was odd.

I get bppv a few times a year. I never do the eply by myself as it can cause the crystals to go into places they shouldn't and make you a lot worse. My gp used to do it for me but I now just rude it out till it settles itself over the course of a week or so. Sleep propped up on a few pillows and keep well hydrated. Hope it settles soon for you

Dita73 · 23/12/2021 22:31

I feel absolutely awful for you. I’ve had it twice this year and I also have a vomiting phobia. Since the last time it happened it hasn’t completely gone away. Every time I lay in bed I feel a bit dizzy and it scares me to death that I’m going to get a full blown vertigo attack. I also have horrific health anxiety and I’m certain I have a brain tumour or something! I’ve also found that when it starts to ease I get a headache which is weird. I can tell you that what make it worse for me is tiredness. Even if I go back to bed for an hour it can help but obviously not practical if you have a baby. I think you should definitely try the exercises. I haven’t yet as I’m worried that I’ll do it wrong and make it worse. If I have another vertigo attack I will do it. I hope you soon feel better xx

I've done the manoeuvres myself with really good effect.

I just used the spray one out of Holland and Barrett initially as it is quickly absorbed - it’s a d3 / K2 combination called better you DLux+. Now I’m just doing it as a routine I use any good brand with 100-200mg of vit K2 and a separate 4000iu of d3 in a gel capsule. I was put on betahistine plus others but nothing worked. I haven’t tried the Epley manouvere so I cannot comment on this. I was having attacks once or twice a week . After I found out about K2 online I tried it and the last attack I had was a few days after starting it. Literally nothing in the two years since so fingers crossed it continues.
Thepineapplemystery · 23/12/2021 22:41

Yes, just had this for 7 weeks. Back to nearly normal now. Couldn't drive or work for 5 weeks, was awful. Eplys manovers helped but it isn't a quick fix. It was rest and time for me. No medication helped either. DH ended up doing absolutely everything.

blissfulllife · 23/12/2021 22:46

@Dita73 might be worth you looking into vestibular migraines x

nokidshere · 23/12/2021 22:48

I do the Ellet moves myself lying on my bed. They are very simple and remarkably effective.
