FIL has covid. Positive PCR on Dec 14th. Symptoms started 12/13th.

He was hoping to be out on 24th but he tested positive on LF tonight.

Is he a risk and does he need to stay isolated till he’s negative?

This is good to know so thank you all for posting. My Ds (14 ) currently has covid and his 10 days are up on Wednesday, so allowed out of isolation on Thursday, but all LFTs are still very positive - not at all faint, and his cough is still REALLY bad. So I'm glad to know he can actually leave his room on Thursday!! Hope everyone that has caught it is keeping ok. Take care everyone.

@Nearlyshitmypantsthere he can't leave his room if his cough is bad as that's a symptom isn't it?
dementedpixie · 28/12/2021 08:09

The cough can linger for weeks so you can leave isolation with a cough and/or loss of taste and smell

You can return to your normal routine and stop self-isolating after 10 full days if your symptoms have gone, or if the only symptoms you have are a cough or anosmia, which can last for several weeks. If you still have a high temperature after 10 days or are otherwise unwell, stay at home and seek medical advice.

If the cough is the only symptom he has then he can leave isolation. If he has other symptoms, bar them loss of smell, then he couldn’t.

@JustLyra thank you Smile

When I potentially had covid pre-testing I only had to isolate for a week, then it was 10 days, now t2r on days 6/7. My household contacts then had to isolate for 2 weeks and now there’s no isolation period for contacts!l, only lfts.

It’s changed a lot over the course of 21 months.

Popping back in case anyone’s still reading to say the advice here is WRONG!

Dr Friend of dr friend with specialism in infectious diseases says you’re still infectious till your PCR is negative.

They're wrong The .gov website says this:

You should not take any moreLFDtests after the 10th day of your isolation period and you may stop self-isolating after this day. This is because you are unlikely to be infectious after the 10th day of your isolation period. Even if you have a positiveLFDtest result on the 10th day of your self-isolation period you should not take any moreLFDtests after this day. If you are concerned you may choose to keep following the above advice until 14 days after the start of your self-isolation period.

I have a question which I’m a bit confused about.
I tested positive yesterday and my children are still testing negative. If they continue to test negative, do they have to isolate until my 10 days are up?
So for example, when it’s time to go back to school next week, can they go back if someone else takes them for me?

JanglyBeads · 28/12/2021 19:33

No, only unvaccinated household members over 18.5 have to isolate - unless they start showing symptoms.

The guidance and its ever-changing nature IS confusing!

funinthesun19 · 28/12/2021 19:50

Ah that’s good to know. Thank you. It is very confusing, I can never keep up!

Can anyone clarify if you test negative on days 6&7 can you leave isolation on day 7 or do you have to wait until day 8?
I've seen it written as both 'isolating for 7 days' and 'leave house on or after day 7.'

The day you get symptoms or test positive is day 0. If you test negative on day 6 and day 7, and the tests were taken at least 24 hours apart, you can stop self-isolating after the second negative test, as long as you don't have a fever.
LadyCathdeBourgh · 28/12/2021 23:26

Thanks Lougle. So I read that as freedom on day 7 after the test results.
I actually got positive results on days 6 & 7 but I still have a chance to leave the house on day 9 then if I get my 2 negative tests.
