Why does ‘Christmas food’ use so much moulded plastic?

My DH loves buying in ‘Christmas’ food, as in, the ‘festive’ party food that gets made especially for Christmas. I know I probably sound like a kill joy, but the amount of plastic packaging is phenomenal. Yesterday, the M&S ‘mini crumpets with pulled pork and Stilton’ were a classic example. Maybe 8-10 tiny crumpets, each about 5 cm across, each with its own moulded plastic compartment, plus sellophane, plus cardboard box. It is completely insane. Like Easter eggs but even worse, because you’ve also got all the energy that goes into processing, refrigeration etc etc. How crazy the world is.

Yep, I find party food to be a particularly environmentally unfriendly product. It also never tastes that great either, personally I’m not a fan of ready meal / convenience food.

As an aside, a crumpet with pulled pork and Stilton sounds absolutely fucking horrendous 😷

I agree about the crumpet! It’s one of our family traditions that he does all the shopping as he loves Christmas and I can’t really be bothered with it. Left to myself I think the whole food side would just pass me by. Actually crumpets being tiny are quite novel but then you’d also need a tiny toaster.

And it's expensive too. Mini toad in the hole for £7. You can make it for pennies

I like the idea of party food, but it's often brown / in breadcrumbs / a bit dull

Better to make your own
