Pain after Root Canal

totallyfrusted · 22/12/2021 19:32

I had some extensive root canal work on Monday afternoon on my front teeth and am now in excruciating pain.

Im taking neurofen and paracetamol but it’s not touching it. Any thought on what else I can do?

Im calling the dentist in the morning but any ideas on what I can do over night would be very appreciated.

The root canal was done following an accident and there was no infection

The tooth is throbbing and I’ve pain all around it and up in the gum.

Ive a high pain threshold normally but I’ve never experienced anything like this before

--I don't know how to

Pm from app--just take your normal pain relief I'm afraid and don't use a hot compress. you can use cold wrapped in a towel. can sleep propped up a bit. obviously avoid eating on the area. you're welcome to phone 111 too

I had a root canal a couple of years ago. The pain was intense for a day, maybe two. It subsided after that and has been fine since.
It's absolutely horrible!

Splashinginpuddles15 · 22/12/2021 20:10

Hugs x I had similar . The dentist told me that the ligaments which hold the tooth in get all shaken up and take a time to settle down again . No solutions I am afraid , but it will stop .

totallyfrusted · 22/12/2021 20:13

Thanks all. I’ve got an ice pack so will try that. Why did I think it would be a good idea to get it done this week 😩😩

Oh shit. I would probably have left this til after Christmas - as you're going to struggle to get this sorted now. To still have it hurting bad for a third day is unusual but not unheard of. Take ibuprofen - or naproxen if you have it, and hopefully it should settle down in a day or two.

I found I had pain after a root canal that I think was the mouth being battered and bruised from being held open and pushed around rather than the actual tooth.

Cattitudes · 22/12/2021 20:20

Similar situation and it did calm down, although it took quite a while, probably about 4-5 days.

SparklingLime · 22/12/2021 20:25

If someone can go to a chemist for you, get some Cocodamol (codeine and paracetamol, so it would replace the paracetamol you’re already taking). Might at least help you sleep.

Usernamqwerty · 22/12/2021 20:29

Second cocodamol from the pharmacy x

Foolsrule · 22/12/2021 20:31

I think that’s a bit odd. When I had a root canal procedure, I only took ibuprofen for 24 hours after, as advised by the dentist, and didn’t really need that.

GrannyGoggles · 22/12/2021 20:31

I have had excruciating pain after root canal work. Unlike your situation, it was re-doing failed, old work. There is a difference between post surgery tenderness and extreme pain. I had an infection and it was grim. In your shoes, particularly just before Christmas, I would be asking for antibiotics tomorrow

SpanielsAreMyLife · 22/12/2021 20:34

I had one done on a back molar and it was agony for about 5/6 days afterwards. I took co-codamol 4 hourly and Nurofen.

I think it took a good 6 weeks to fully settle down.

You need medication with codeine in

Clarich007 · 22/12/2021 20:39

So sory you're suffering. Tooth pain is awful. I had my fro t tooth done 2 years ago, it was almost painless. A bit tender the same day, took about 4 paracetamol over the next day, and that was it. Maybe I was just lucky

sonjadog · 22/12/2021 20:41

I had an infection that required root canal work, but the infection was bad enough that it needed antibiotics and time to heal. It was incredibly painful. Definitely phone your dentist as soon as you can. Is there an emergency dentist you can contact tonight? You have my sympathy. It was the worst pain I have ever experienced.

jalopy · 22/12/2021 20:47

I had similar pain and it was because I was allergic to the temporary dressing that is put into the tooth before the permanent filler eventually goes in.
The pain and swelling to the gum were unreal. I had no infection. The temp dressing had to be removed and steroidal med was instilled to calm the reaction down. It was fine almost immediately after it was removed, thank goodness. Any dental pain is hideous. Sympathies to you.

feliciabirthgiver · 22/12/2021 20:48

I hope you feel better soon, I personally find Paramol (in the black box from the pharmacy) more effective than Co codamal for tooth pain, I really would see if someone can you get some before you go to bed.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 22/12/2021 21:22

Do you have another appointment or is the work complete? Is it possible the filling (or crown) is high and effecting your bite? That can be really painful.

totallyfrusted · 22/12/2021 21:31

I will send my husband out to get some co codamol.

Unfortunately this is just the start of a lot of dental work following an accident in the summer.

I’ll be in the phone to the dentist first thing. He did say to call if the pain got bad.
