AIBU to rest the turkey crown after cooking in a hostess trolley on Christmas day?

Or should I wrap it in foil and blankets?

Not sure which method would rest the meat most effectively.

My friend, and a fellow mumsnetter, suggested resting the turkey upside down, in a tray, in a cool box. The big, solid plastic box type. Worked like a charm.

TheSmallAssassin · 22/12/2021 22:14

I just pop it on the carving dish and cover it in foil.

Itsmeeloise · 22/12/2021 22:18

Surely foil and blankets is too much - it'll keep on cooking not resting!

Sounds interesting! I think I have a cool box in garage somewhere.

As would a hostess trolley I think?

Another vote for upside down in foil

Butterfly0909 · 22/12/2021 23:25

@ShirleyPhallus Just wondered why you rest the turkey upside down?

So that the juices run back into the meat I assume?

Just here really to say bloody love the mention of a hostess trolley.

BorisKilledMyHusband · 23/12/2021 00:04

Only if you get Barry to bend you over backwards on the hostess trolley.

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/12/2021 00:04

Me too @KellyJonesLeatherTrousers.Xmas Blush My Ex-MiL had one that she always wheeled out at Christmas. It made Christmas lunch more exciting. Xmas Grin

BorisKilledMyHusband · 23/12/2021 00:08

Then beat you on the bottom with a Woman’s Weekly

Stonerosie67 · 23/12/2021 00:13

Ooh I bloody love cooking Christmas dinner purely because of my mother's 1970s hostess trolley, which makes it an absolute doddle! No stressing about timing - this relic of another age spends 364 days of the year standing in her hallway, covered in photos and a vase of flowers, but for one day only, it comes to my house and its invaluable!!
If it ever packs in, Christmas dinner is fucked!

And I have a copy of woman's weekly to hand, just in case....🤣🤣🤣

RonniePickering · 23/12/2021 01:20

I did NOT know hostess trolleys were heated 🤔

Sarahzb · 23/12/2021 01:39

Beat me on the bottom with a Woman's Weekly.
my Mum had those. Hoooot.
But just let it rest for the cooking time with couple tea towels and foil. Don't keep warm in trolley -the juices will then be pulled back into the bird
Then you can get on with potatoes etc in the oven.

Butterfly0909 · 23/12/2021 06:11

I have woken up to all of your replies and laughed out loud Grin. I particularly enjoyed the reference to Women's Weekly. As a child I used to love reading my Nan's copy. My favourite part was Mary Marriat advises at the back of each edition!

I cover with clingfilm then foil and turn upside down. Works with all meats. Watched a chef on TV do it, never turned back… also loving the mention of a hostess trolley 😂

ColleysMill · 23/12/2021 06:20

I usually stick mine in the hostess trolley - the trolley just keeps things warm and doesn't cook it more (well mine doesn't get hot enough to anyway!!)

I rarely use my trolley tbh but at Christmas I wouldn't be without it!!

RobertSmithsLipstick · 23/12/2021 06:21

Spank me on the bottom with me woman's weekly! Grin

Trying to link to Let’s Do It by Victoria Wood but failing. It really is golden

My lovely long departed Granny bought us a hostess trolley when we were first married as apparently every family “needs” one. And she’s absolutely right - out it comes every Christmas!!

Dh is an ex chef and all our roast meat gets rested for at least 30 mins tucked up in a snug foil blanket - definitely not in the hostess trolley though. Really not sure it would fit in there anyway.

The technical bit is that it allows the protein strands to relax and makes it more tender apparently.

Mumsnut · 23/12/2021 06:39

Flowers Robert!

RobertSmithsLipstick · 23/12/2021 06:45

Any excuse to play a bit of victoria.
I can never hear the words hostess trolley the same way since that song.
Genius! Grin

Mumdiva99 · 23/12/2021 06:48

No idea about resting meat but The Ballard of Barry and Frieda is my favourite song. I think it's the joy with which she sings it I love.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/12/2021 06:57

I'm so glad someone posted a link the that song.

Yesterday my daughter tested positive for Covid and now won't be home for Christmas. I need as many things that bring me joy as I can today.

As someone who panic bought a heated food warmer two years in a row I wouldn't be without one (or two). Foil and tea towel here to rest before carving is my advice.
