AIBU Hoovering at 8am?

WeebleGirl · 22/12/2021 09:01

The neighbour in the flat above me started banging in protest to my hoovering this morning at a little past 8am.

For context, it's a weekday and I'm off today on annual leave. There is usually lot's of periods of radio silence from us when we are at work (when she isn't). Both of us have children under 5. However hers is up every night past 9pm. We often have lot's of banging, shouting and running around past this time when our daughter is in bed. It's mildly irritating, but we'd never say anything.

So, AIBU in thinking that hoovering at this time isn't an issue when the chances of your neighbour being awake already are fairly high?

I think 8am is a fine time to hoover personally. Both me and the joining neighbour are up hoovering/making general household noise at around 7:30am.

ComDummings · 22/12/2021 09:04

I try not to do anything noisy before half 8/9.

RoastedParsnips · 22/12/2021 09:06

I think being the holidays they're less likely to be awake. I was woken up at 8am by my neighbours Tesco delivery banging away outside I was furious as DC still asleep. Grin
I think YABU I would of waited till 9am during the holiday period.

shouldistop · 22/12/2021 09:06

8am is fine. Next time her kids are running around at 9pm you should bang down Grin

FrippEnos · 22/12/2021 09:09

My neighbours are often hoovering at 8am and earlier, they often have the washing machine going from 6am ish.

Its all part of general life noise.

Mydogisagentleman · 22/12/2021 09:15

Hoover away.
8 is not early

AlwaysLatte · 22/12/2021 09:15

I don't think it's early or unreasonable but they obviously do so for neighbourly relations I'd wait till 9.00.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 22/12/2021 09:18

If it was 3am...unreasonable... But 8am is fine...

I've lived in apartments for years... People often don't accept that reasonable living noise is OK during 'uusal hours'.

I did get pretty irritated when a neighbour was trying to stop us walking aroubd DURING the day... As he was on night shift... Apparently he didn't want ear plugs/black out screens or anything else people who work strange hours (I've worked them myself), he just wanted us all to tiptoe around and make no noise...

If they want complete silence they need to move to a detached place in the middle of field...
But then the farm animals would interrupt them😁

Littlescottiedog · 22/12/2021 09:18

I wouldn't do it at 8am. The school I work in only broke up yesterday - today is my first lie-in! I'd have been a bit miffed to hear you hoovering before 9am, to be honest.

PurplePansy05 · 22/12/2021 09:20

YANBU. And it's white noise, not raised voices, banging or music.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 22/12/2021 09:22

8am is completely fine.

JabNotInArm · 22/12/2021 09:24

YANBU. Not like you're drilling or demolishing walls. It's a bloody vacuum cleaner. Where does it end? Not allowed to use a hair dryer or flush the loo before 9am?!

SilverRingahBells · 22/12/2021 09:24

It's a normal working day, she should get a grip.

traintraveller · 22/12/2021 09:44

I might in a house but not in a flat

ThinWomansBrain · 22/12/2021 10:25

made me laugh Xmas Grin

My dad died on boxing day six years ago - the last few years of his life, he lived in one of those 60+ apartments with a warden. The final year, he probably was too unwell for that. The neighbour said that she took it as a concern to knock or call, then alert the warden or call an ambulance if she hadn't heard his hoover before 7am.

8am is fine on a weekday - maybe a bit later on weekends/the actual day etc. Avoiding the whole christmas period would be a nightmare though; lotsof people I know have taken this week off too, if you count this week as 'holiday' period too, that's a really long break.

MorningStarling · 22/12/2021 10:40

8am is too early in a flat. They shouldn't be making noise at 9pm either, but that doesn't excuse hoovering before 10am. If you live in a house it might be different.

0palescent · 22/12/2021 10:42

Next time their kids are running around making noise after 9, you could start the hoover up. Xmas Smile

Slowfoxfast · 22/12/2021 10:44

It's too early in a flat.

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/12/2021 10:45

I’d wait until 9 but who knows if I’m right?

CremeEggThief · 22/12/2021 10:46

YABU if you could do it later in the day but choose not to. (I'm a night owl, so can't understand anyone doing anything like housework early out of choice anyway).

YANBU if you have to do it then as it's the only time you can.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 22/12/2021 10:50

Go knock on her door and talk to her. Tell her you don't knock when her family are noisy after 9pm, you wouldn't dream of being so rude.

8am in holidays is a bit early but not early enough to start banging on ceilings.

Arghlife · 22/12/2021 10:51

Sorry to jump on this thread, but it looks like I'm about to move into a flat, 2nd floor in January time...with a newborn.Blush what's the general time for normal movements, cleaning and making normal noise? I don't want to upset people .

Pigeoninthehouse · 22/12/2021 10:59

Don't see the point of asking on here, your neighbour obviously has an issue with it, so you can either take that into consideration, or get very self righteous about it and continue hoovering at 8.00am, which will probably cause an escalation in problems between you.
Talk to them and ask them if 8.00am is too early and while you're at it mention her kids noise after 9.00pm.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 22/12/2021 11:00

Say sorry and practice your drumming instead.

blahbalbbalddiblah · 22/12/2021 11:01

I live in a flat and in the lease it stipulates no washing machines, hovering etc before 8am or after 9.30 pm. This seems fair to me. TBH my downstairs neighbours occasionally have their washing machine on after 10pm but it doesn't bother me. But I wouldn't want to be hanging around waiting to do my hoovering till 10 am as a pp suggested. By that time I've usually been up for 4 hours and am out of the flat.
