AIBU to risk the cinema tomorrow?

KickingMyself2021 · 21/12/2021 23:03

Haven’t been out on a date night with DH for ages and my parents have offered to babysit. Are we mad considering the cinema tomorrow with the case numbers at the moment?

I want to go but I don’t want to cancelling Christmas plans. I’m a covid worrier as DS is 2 and unvaxxed, but all our festive plans got cancelled cos of the virus.

YABU - stay home, go after Christmas if we aren’t locked down
YANBU - go to the cinema and enjoy yourself

I'd stay home 🙈

millymolls · 21/12/2021 23:15

I went tonight. Great
No idea why you’d particularly worry about your 2 year old unless he’s got significant medical issues

5128gap · 21/12/2021 23:22

I wouldn't think twice, but then I go to gigs and nightclubs and have never caught covid. If you're a worrier though I'd maybe be selective about the film, as less popular choices will have fewer people packed in and there's a chance you can distance. I wouldn't recommend spiderman though!

pinkcattydude · 21/12/2021 23:31

Lol we’ve taken a few more risks and actually been out a number of times on the run up to Christmas this year and been lucky. I then got pinged after having my booster (apparently one of the people getting theirs, tested positive a few days later) If you want to go, go but take precautions. No one can decide for you

VaulterTech · 21/12/2021 23:37

Depends what you’re priority is? I very much want to live my life. Christmas is just one day that can be fine anytime! I’d rather go and enjoy things and if I catch it so be it, I think it’s just a matter of when… however If you’re seeing others on the day who may be travelling / vulnerable etc then possibly it’s different for you?

Stopsnowing · 21/12/2021 23:45

I went tonight to the Odeon and we were the only ones wearing masks. I won’t be going there again.

Houseplantmad · 21/12/2021 23:52

I went tonight and there were loads not wearing masks so I won't be going again for a while. Also the knobs next to me who made several phone calls during the film and took selfies with the flash are another reason I won't be rushing back Hmm

Cherryblossoms85 · 21/12/2021 23:53

We went last week and it was empty, was nice.

BritWifeInUSA · 21/12/2021 23:59

If you’re going to wait for COVID to go away before you go to the cinema, you won’t be going in this lifetime. You likely went shopping etc last year when no one was vaccinated, why do you feel the risk is so large now? You’ve done all you can and unless one of you is close to death I wouldn’t be any more concerned about this virus than any other virus that does the rounds regularly.

5keletor · 22/12/2021 00:00

I wouldn't, trying to avoid being infected as much as I can anyway, but I'm not at all prepared to risk having to isolate over Christmas and cancel all our plans.

sst1234 · 22/12/2021 01:03

OP it’s the cinema, you’re not going into the trenches.

Willyoujustbequiet · 22/12/2021 01:07

After an awful experience recently no, never going back. Simply not worth it.

ShottaSheriff · 22/12/2021 01:10

I’d go if you know it won’t be too busy and you’re comfortable wearing masks. I’ve been to baby cinema (screenings where you can bring a baby) for the last two weeks and it’s been very quiet, so feels sufficiently distanced and low risk.

I’d probably chose an upmarket cinema chain like Everyman over the big standard Odeon/Vue offerings if possible - in my experience much less likely to be full of inconsiderate idiots.

Snugglybuggly · 22/12/2021 01:16

I would go

BeaLola · 22/12/2021 01:55

We went this afternoon - me , DH and DS14 to see Spider-Man

We had the whole row to ourselves - didn't pass anybody at any stage even using toilets

I counted approx 15 others in the cinema that must seat 200+

Depends how busy cinema is - when booking I avoided 2 other screenings in smaller screens which had about 8-12 booked seats

😂😂😂 love this
AntiHop · 22/12/2021 02:16

I was supposed to be going to the cinema this week, but cancelled as I don't want to catch it and cancel my Christmas plans.

TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek · 22/12/2021 02:36

How about a different sort of date? A bit of a drive around to see peoples Christmas lights on their houses. Then a little walk, especially if you have something like a lit path by a river or canal, maybe take a flask of hot chocolate with you, and if you feel like a laugh and can park somewhere very quiet, how about some backseat fun in the car - you could get some fish and chips to eat in the car later!
I was sometimes a very cheap date, Lol.

That all sounds like right faff.

Err maybe because of massive number of cases of a crazily infectious variant?

I’ve been cracking on and living my life pretty much normally over summer + autumn but it’s not entirely surprising people’s risk assessment has changed right now.

OP - personally I wouldn’t. Not because I think it’s hugely high risk but I wouldn’t find the risk/reward trade-off worked for me. But then I’ve always thought the cinema is a peculiar ‘date night’ choice anyway. If I had a babysitter right now I’d probably wrap up warm and go to one of the local bars that has outdoor seating with heaters and cosy throws (plus I think the local independent bars would value our custom more than a cinema chain). That would feel lower risk and higher reward for me.

slashlover · 22/12/2021 04:16

@MNHQ really needs a specific section where people can ask "Should I go to this party/gathering/place or not?" as they're taking over AIBU and the Coronavirus board.
