Minor car accident - AIBU to refuse to speak with the driver?

I bumped a car today. I apologised and gave my details to the driver. Since then I’ve had a load of abusive messages making things up that didn’t happen.

Can I just block them and wait for insurance to deal with it?

If you've given your details, you've met your responsibility. I had a minor bash, the driver went mad and I ended up calling the police. The police officer told me I'd met my obligations by passing details, so go on my way. I left while he calmed the other driver down.

Block his number and let insurance deal with it.

You should retain the messages [phone or email] as evidence, just in case the other driver decides to make a false report and lay the blame on you.
Probably worth telling your insurance company that you are suffering this harassment and have evidence.

Did you notify the police? About the accident, not the other driver! You’re supposed to do that.

Bonbon21 · 21/12/2021 17:44

I would suggest you write everything down as soon as possible, with as much detail as you can. Even a couple of days later we miss things out, so recording it all now means you have a proper record to refer to when dealing with the matter in the future.

Wrong. Not all accidents are notifiable. Unless someone was injured, it’s unlikely to be necessary.
GoodnightGrandma · 21/12/2021 17:46

Did you take photos of the bump ?

GoodnightGrandma · 21/12/2021 17:47

I rang the police and ambulance for a teenager that had been knocked off his bike by a car. The police weren’t interested.

Thefuturestory · 21/12/2021 17:47

If they are abusive consider reporting to police as malicious communication

WindyState · 21/12/2021 17:48

Don't call the police for a minor bump ffs. Exchange details and let the insurance sort it out.

AD80 · 21/12/2021 17:48

You've given your details so yes ignore and let insurance deal with it. Dp bumped into a car a year or two ago. Gave his details and never really heard from the person he bumped into again. She did however text to say she was repairing the damage at the main dealers and not an independent - that was out of his control though! I assume you've reported to insurance already?

bakebeans · 21/12/2021 19:51

You’ve provided your details. You’ve reported it to your insurance company. You don’t need to do anything else. Block him
