I thought it would be fun to create a list of banned conversation topics for Christmas get togethers, I will start but feel free to add to this list!

Homophobia
The refugee crisis (although suppose that is covered by immigration)
America (unless it’s nature or travel)
Complaints about said dinner
That one annoying person at work or your annoying friend

sueelleker · 21/12/2021 13:46

Be easier to take a vow of silenceGrin

ZenNudist · 21/12/2021 13:47

In my house Brexit and the Tories.

0blio · 21/12/2021 13:53

Money
Religion
The route home (I think I'll take the A245 then the M62, so I can avoid the B123 bla bla bla ...)

HeronLanyon · 21/12/2021 13:57

Our list includes

Brexit fallout consequences
Transgender issues women’s’ rights and sexual politics generally
Holidaying long haul especially - Covid and climate related tensions previously noticed there
The need for one set of relatives to think about cleaning/sorting help NOT To be mentioned
Inheritance issues with another set of family some bitterness there
What to do with a parent’s ashes

All of the above have been bubbling under and over and need to be avoided.

To help this along I am planning to really watch what I drink.

Love all of my family and they love me but bloody hell want to get through meet ups this year without flare ups.

Thankfully we are all on the very same page te Covid and lateral flows and respecting each others’ vulnérabilités etc.

Happy Christmas everyone and good luck.

jennytheonionslayer · 21/12/2021 13:59

Oh, and god, religion and atheism, how could I forget these!

OP posts:
Pemba · 21/12/2021 14:00

The Royal family, especially Harry and Meghan, Andrew. Nearly had a big fallout with my elderly parents earlier in the year over this. If DF brings it up I shall ignore and change the subject. I think some older people enjoy being goady!

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 21/12/2021 14:00

I would like to ban 1) new kitchens I will never see, bought by relatives I have never met 2) the personal lives of people who I have met once, and honestly couldn't pick out of a police line-up and 3) Strictly Come Dancing. However, if I did ban them, my DMIL (who I do love, even though we are very different) would have absolutely nothing to talk about

OldaRailer · 21/12/2021 14:01

Recycling
Veganism for the planet
Cheap fashion

HeronLanyon · 21/12/2021 14:02

In my family the other topics banned (see above) seem to mean that ‘god religion and atheism’ is now pretty ‘safe’ by comparison.

Justgivemeamoment · 21/12/2021 14:03

The route home, YES Grin

Half the extended family has had COVID recently. Can see some really interesting speculations coming why someone caught it and someone else didn't.

OldaRailer · 21/12/2021 14:03

Anything that's an "ism."

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/12/2021 14:05

We don’t have many topics we can’t discuss because we mainly have similar opinions about things. Some things I try to avoid are:

-Trans rights (my opinion is not considered woke)
-Covid (it’s boring and I’d like to spend Christmas not talking about it
-Brexit/Tories (same reasons as Covid)

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/12/2021 14:06

We just agree not to tell Jew jokes.

(We are atheist Jewish Christmas-philes, not raging yet seasonably benevolent antisemites.)

Covid and Politics

AnnaMagnani · 21/12/2021 14:09

A new one in our house is the BBC. Apparently they pay every one far too much but claim to be short of cash so have had to steal it off the pensioners.

DM has only been here 3 days and this is her favourite topic. It's banned along with anything else she's read in the Daily Mail which she claims she just gets for the TV schedule

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/12/2021 14:10

In a normal year we have both mil and my parents and they always get onto competitive poverty in their childhoods, and what they used to call different bread products (muffins, rolls etc) in their various regions.

This year nobody is coming as I am too sick so I will perversely miss it and next year will actually encourage it.

Bloody hell ComtesseDeSpair I didn't know where that was goingShock Grin.
CrapSticks · 21/12/2021 14:17

Budgies
Work
The shagability of Boris and Trump (who would you rather sleep with etc)
Covid

Pluto99 · 21/12/2021 14:18

Brexit

ellie21 · 21/12/2021 14:23

My in-laws have just come for lunch. My FIL has already covered Boris, Covid jabs, Covid, transgender rights and the Police State.
I wish I’d read this first. I’ve had to leave my own house to escape.

0blio · 21/12/2021 14:23

Blush Oh dear, that's me. I don't know how many times I must have told my children how we only ever had chicken at Christmas when I was small as it was such an expensive treat. I'll shut up about it now I've told you lot as well Xmas Grin

Hope you're feeling better soon @TheCountessofFitzdotterel

Talk of Diets is banned in our house ALL the time.

AngelonTopoftheTree · 21/12/2021 14:24

Not a topic for discussion, but no playing monopoly allowed.

HeronLanyon · 21/12/2021 14:31

angelon we spent years not being allowed to play trivial pursuit after one ‘game’ played when my elderly mum decided she wanted to try cannabis which even more bizarrely someone had with them. After a lot of giggling (by those partaking) it all went wrong and was NEVER spoken of. As she is now dead (and much missed) maybe we could rethink. Hmmm - don’t partake myself.
