Posting for traffic, sorry! So proud of dd, she passed this morning! We bought her a little car that we also use as a run around, very basic with small engine. Can anyone recommend an insurance company for new drivers without a black box?

Admiral have always been very helpful for car insurance. I don’t know about black box requirements.

santaclothes · 21/12/2021 13:30

Direct line were the best for DD when she passed - it's was £1200 but some places were 4 times that with the black box!!

santaclothes · 21/12/2021 13:31

Also make sure the excess isn't sky high for a lower premium.

lastqueenofscotland · 21/12/2021 13:32

Without a black box sadly I’d expect it to be insanely high. Is there any reason you don’t want one?

NiceTwin · 21/12/2021 13:32

Why not have a black box?
My dd went with Admiral with a black box and is now with AA, still with a black box.

Fairyliz · 21/12/2021 13:32

I’m another one who found Direct Line were cheapest for a new driver.
DD gas also had to contact them a couple of times re a minor accident and they were very helpful.

NiceTwin · 21/12/2021 13:33

I should say, there were quotes from the companies with or without the black box.
We paid £1500 (for a £900 car) and she is now down to £1200.

santaclothes · 21/12/2021 13:34

DD didn't want a black box because all the reasonable prices quotes had ridiculous excesses, mileage restrictions and curfews on the policies. She opted for the best overall policy for the money and that was without a BB.

mumofEandE · 21/12/2021 13:34

Why no black box!

mumsneedwine · 21/12/2021 13:34

Igenie only I sure young drivers. V good quote and you get money off of you drive well (obviously requires a black box).

nodtik · 21/12/2021 13:36

Son just insured with General Accident.

Has black box on 2017 reg Polo.

Cost £1200 fully comp!

nokidshere · 21/12/2021 13:38

DS1 had Hastings direct for his first year, no black box and cost £895.

Blush21 · 21/12/2021 13:40

Compare the market is your friend, I went with admiral. They offer a black box policy and one without that’s slightly more. Elephant diamond etc are also admiral companies.

LonelySock · 21/12/2021 13:41

£790 with marmalade and a black box that's linked to her phone and excludes my driving.

But if you're not desperate, wait a couple of months and the quotes often come down compared to the week they've passed!

BoudecaBains · 21/12/2021 13:55

Insurance for young drivers is so expensive. All you can do is try as many sites and brokers as you can. My daughter's was just under £3000 but that is due to being SE London/Surrey altho it's only for a Mini. The black box thing was only a relatively small saving.

Agrudge · 21/12/2021 14:13

When car insurance I'm glad I'm not under 25 anymore. Me and black boxes wouldnt be compatible

Agrudge · 21/12/2021 14:14

Thats was meant to be. When it comes to car insurance

QueenArnica · 21/12/2021 14:20

Thanks so much everyone! Smile

No one here can tell you what your best option is as so much depends on the location, type of car, where it’s kept overnight, who if anyone will be a named driver etc etc

Get on compare the market and do a search. I agree that black box isn’t always the right choice especially if other members of the family might be driving the car. And if you do go down that read examine closely the conditions as they are not all the same

SirSamuelVimes · 21/12/2021 14:26

You are best just doing a trawl of insurance comparison sites and the sites that don't show up, like direct line.

Play about with excess and comp / 3PF&T / 3P. Sometimes it can be cheaper to get comprehensive than third party! It all depends what that company is prioritising at the time as they will adjust their premiums depending on who they want in, so that they can maintain a balanced portfolio of risk.

I would consider the black box but as a pp said, some of the restrictions are bonkers!

SleighbellsZ · 21/12/2021 14:27

I would go on to compare.
Fully comp
You and dad on as additional drivers
Excess- the higher the excess the lower the premium. I wouldn't go very high on it though. But you can play around with it.
Don't need breakdown if you have it via your bank etc.

blobby10 · 21/12/2021 15:11

My daughter used Ingenie and they were brilliant. She was the main driver so built up NCD plus she got cash back each quarter depending on how carefully /well she drove ie no sharp corners, ono sudden braking etc. Presumably she must have had a black box fitted for them to get that information but it certainly made her a better driver!

oreosoreosoreos · 21/12/2021 15:37

We’ve used Admiral with DSS - there’s a discount for a multicar policy, as we’re already with them. It also made a huge discount with myself and DH being on the policy as named drivers. The policy is in DSS’s name, so he’s building no claims etc, we’re just extra drivers. Very handy to be able to use his car occasionally too, as his Seat Ibiza is bigger than my Fiat 500!

MasterBeth · 21/12/2021 15:44

My 20 y.o. has just passed. We were dreading the insurance cost , but the additional premium for him for about a year is around £600. Admiral.

NiceTwin · 21/12/2021 19:02

@oreosoreosoreos we did that. When it came to renew, they were way way above other quotes. Do check before you renew!
