Had an absolutely horrific year and planned to head off the Dubai this week to sit Christmas out / have some fun. I’d be going on my own and if I stayed here I’d also be on my own, y’know as opposed to that awkward non-family person intruding on a friend’s big day(s). (I’ve done both scenarios several times before and not really enjoyed it)

Of course now, thanks to dithering Boris no one knows what the f**k is going on travel wise. An expert on LBC earlier was saying it’s not the time to be doing any independent travel but package tours should be ok. Obvs I’m doing independent travel and am pretty independent. However, am I missing something - other than possibly having to rearrange flights is there any other reason not to go? Apparently even if they decide there will be fines for going on hols if you get out before it’s announced they have to let you back in but the number of flights will reduce.

Would you go? Dubai is currently massively less impacted with covid than here due to very strict restrictions but friends are worried about me going.

Hey gang Happy New Year - just a quick update, in case it helps anyone else considering taking the plunge. I went and was having such a lovely time that when I accidentally discovered it wouldn’t cost anything to change my return flight home by a few days, I did! That’s something I’ve never done before.

Felt so much safer in Dubai in all senses. Covid rules are extremely tight, you need vaccination certs or less than 48 hour pcr to enter some events and it’s masks everywhere indoors and out except when eating and serious consideration to social distancing. You don’t give it a second thought after a few hours.

I know there are problems below the surface but I couldn’t get over how polite and friendly everyone was and how clean and pleasant everything is kept. Honestly, never a lonely moment. I spent a few hours by the pool every morning then headed out to the sights, usually not getting back before 10:30. Evenings, in my experience, can be tricky when solo travelling if all that is available is going for a meal but there was loads of stuff to do. Hadn’t really heard about Expo 2020 (I know head in a bucket, right?) but went 3 times and saw probably less than 20% of it - it is truly amazing and has given me an even longer bucket list of places I want to visit.

So thanks to everyone who encouraged me to go, have already been made aware this year is going to be very challenging, so it was just the tonic I needed. Xx
