why are all celebrity perfume ads so naff?

Light hearted - but watching tv I keep seeing really naff ads with celebrities which are cringe worthy. The perfume ones are particularly bad - not all of them, the ones that use models are sometimes ok. But the ones with a big name in are often really dumb. Is it just me? Why would ad agencies do that?

Yanbu - they’re all so pretentious they make me cringe

GreenLunchBox · 20/12/2021 22:41

Perfume ads are bonkers. In our house when a new one comes on its become a game to shout "PERFUME AD" before they show what is being advertised and nobody's been wrong yet.

Like the Simpsons Mr Plow advert

YANBU! I don't understand the thinking being most perfume ads. I suppose any type of ad puts their name out there, but while I may remember there was a ridiculous ad with what's-his-face in a sailboat, I rarely notice the name of the perfume, much less make a mental note to look it up for more information.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 20/12/2021 22:50

I like the Johnny Depp one, very retro.

Joolsin · 20/12/2021 22:57

The Eros one is horrific. I also hate the growly voiceovers on male perfume ads, not attractive at all. The Kiera Knightly Chanel one - that cream leather jumpsuit is not a nice garment and distracts me with how weird it looks on her.

MissSteak · 20/12/2021 23:10

The creative directors must be sniffing too much perfume, whilst making snow angels in the piles of money the houses throw at them.

Or else I’m just an elasticated waist, acrylic wearing pleb; who’s too unfashionable to understand.

PegasusReturns · 20/12/2021 23:37

The Julia Roberts one drives me mad. A beautiful women who has pulled off some amazing red carpet looks reduced to an airbrushed suburban soccer mum in a fucking fit and flare dress.

Spooked102 · 20/12/2021 23:39

I actually love the Dior ad with Charlize Theron she looks stunning as always

lockedinandout · 20/12/2021 23:44

The one with Miley Cyrus in really offends me.

ethelredonagoodday · 20/12/2021 23:48

We (including the kids) laugh our heads off at them. They're, in the main, clearly expensive to make, and very shit!

YNBU !!!! Whether they have a celeb in them or not perfume ads are the worst !!!
My DP has to hear me complain over and over during ads cos I'm always like "yeahhh cos that splash of fragrance will make me feel like I'm flying in space, lying in a flower bed or any other non sensical imaginative stuff...

Just say this stuff smells nice, it costs thousands of pounds per ml and have done

Drops mic 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

antisocialsocialclub · 21/12/2021 08:27

I think you can just take ‘celebrity’ out OP, they’re all baff and cringey. 🤣

I think it’s law for the ad team to take LSD whilst coming up with concepts for perfume ads 😊

TroysMammy · 21/12/2021 08:36

They'll be back for Valentine's Day.

SpindleWhirling · 21/12/2021 08:39

@NeverTalksToStrangers

I hate so many. The lady gaga one makes no sense and the song is shit.
It's shite isn't it?

My DD went to see that film she's in, the Gucci thing, and says it's shite as well.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/12/2021 08:56

I’ve come to the conclusion that they have an annual competition, to see whose can be the most ludicrous.

In this house they’re good for a laugh, though.

(Except the Daisy Daisy, Perfect Perfect ones - they’re just supremely irritating).

Vodkaandgingerale · 21/12/2021 09:30

I love the Gucci Flora Miley Cyrus one..the song is fab and cheers me up Grin
But I agree the rest are pants..

Here's the thing though, does Miley Cyrus appeal to the demographic that can afford Gucci perfume?
Gardeningcreature · 21/12/2021 14:23

I prefer the old retro adds. Smash and the likes.
I suppose you can’t really be saying things such a chocolate bar helps you ‘Work rest and play.’
Or say a chocolate bar is ‘Full of Cadbury goodness.’
I feel the same about car ads though.
Silly voice overs with men staring into the middle distance. They never state how many miles to the gallon it does, what insurance group it is, cost or other vital info. They Just show reels of it being driven in a desert or around a mountain.

thereisonlyoneofme · 21/12/2021 14:52

The Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron ones are years old now, I dont even remember what perfume they are advertising though !

I almost choked on my lunch at this

A pair of silk pyjamas hang from the antlers of a mighty stag

Across the way Benedict Cumberbatch emerges from behind a tree, naked but for a neon crown

“You’ll find me where the wind doth blow”

He closes his eyes & strains

And grows a pair of antlers, from his nipples

KENZO

Snoozer11 · 21/12/2021 15:16

When I look at Kristen Stewart and Zendaya, I don't see two people who I think would smell nice.

Quite the opposite, actually.

And don't get me started on the freaks in the Marc Jacob's Perfect ad. Xmas Envy

TellingBone · 21/12/2021 15:29

No idea which after shave but it's a bloke on a motorbike with a woman hanging off him and he keeps flinging his forearms back for some unknown reason. Looks like Hugh Laurie gone wrong.

Eros - call me picky but I don't find blokes in big knickers attractive.

Gaultier - hello sailor. Again.

CounsellorTroi · 21/12/2021 15:30

Would this ad persuade anyone to buy Tweed?
