DH has lost the dogs vaccination documents.

They are his dogs, he competes them and has the docs for that I never see the paperwork. They are going to kennels this afternoon, we go away first thing tomorrow morning. He never puts stuff away properly and then shoves it just anywhere when it's in the way. He never checks he has stuff in good time so now he is in a panic on the phone to the vet.
How long should I leave it before I suggest, for the umpteenth time, that if he put stuff away he would be able to find it when he needs it?

YABU - leave it, you will be wasting your breath, it's been 40 years and he will meet change.
YANBU - after the dogs are at the kennels and we have had a glass of wine.

I own a kennels, I just ring and ask the vets the vaccination status.
It happens far to often, your dh is not alone.

Many vets haven't been signing vet cards because of Covid, I have had to ring vets more this year than I ever have.
Do you have a drawer he can put then safe in....if he ever finds them.

Blossomtoes · 20/12/2021 14:05

We keep ours in the glove box of the car as that’s the only way the dog can travel to the kennels.

icedcoffees · 20/12/2021 14:07

He can just ring the vet and ask for a copy. It's nothing to stress over.

MizzFizz · 20/12/2021 14:08

Pointing out his mistake, when it's perfectly obvious to him he's messed up, will not motivate him to change. If anything it will just breed resentment. He knows he's messed up.

SituationCritical · 20/12/2021 14:08

We misplaced our dogs records during a house move. Just rang the vets and they emailed over conformation she is vaccinated with dates. It really isn't a big deal

I just wish he would learn from it. He is the same with tools. The number of duplicates he has because he couldn't find one do bought another is ridiculous. We have a organised filing cabinet with labelled sections. I have been put shelves in the shed with boxes labelled plumbing, decorating etc to try and make it easy and everything is either not in the shed or in a heap on the floor. These days I just hide when he is stomping around huffing because he can't find something.

We do this, too. And thanks, OP - you’ve reminded me that my young canine friend needs his booster and check up within the fortnight so I’ve just made the appointment! Have a good Christmas.

And he is now waiting for the vet to email confirmation so it's sorted but he has been ransacking the house for an hour getting stressed.

We dont have any- they are electronic now since Cv19- are you the same?
Call the vet and ask for an email?

thevassal · 20/12/2021 14:19

No help with the tools but can you suggest he starts taking a photo of any important docs he gets as soon as he opens them so at least he has a copy if he can't find the originals?

It’s really best to bite your tongue. No one likes a “I told you so” no matter how justified it is. If anything, suggest you jointly have a good spring clean and organise over a weekend or two come March.

We'vehad many such sort outs and he "is definitely going to be more organised" if it lasts a couple of days I consider it highly successful. I know he won't change, we've been married over 40 years but it's good to vent somewhere sometimes. When he gets back from dropping the dogs off he will start to think about what clothes to pack. I can guarantee he will decide he is short of warm socks or something but it's too late now.
