Would anyone else do this?

I'm moving out of my flat in a few weeks, and I'm getting rid of a few bits of furniture i.e. tv unit, 2 x sofas, triple wardrobe, etc.

I have booked a dump the jump guy, just because I can't be bothered with the faff of anything else, but there is a new tenant in my building, and I'm not sure if he's come here from prison/temp accommodation, but I thought he may not yet have everything furniture-wise (as I didn't for a few months when I first moved in)

Would it be rude to ask if he could make use of any of my stuff?

I'd ask.

They can say no and you're moving so you don't care if he thinks you're odd.

Nowomenaroundeh · 20/12/2021 14:18

I would definitely ask. You could really help him out. Phrase it in a "it's not long since you moved in" or "I'm checking with everyone close by" so you don't offend him.

FictionalCharacter · 20/12/2021 14:20

Just ask - he might be delighted! As @Nowomenaroundeh said, you could say you’re asking around. I’m sure he won’t be offended.

I work with people who are housed from being homeless/prison/hospital.
It is really hard now to get furniture for free through government funding so please check with them!

Cocomarine · 20/12/2021 14:25

Don’t see why that would ever be seen as rude!

twodown · 20/12/2021 14:57

Okay, I will give him a knock and ask him.

Thanks all.

Could you not have tried charity furniture shops which collect, local auction or free cycle if it’s in good condition.

Georgeskitchen · 20/12/2021 15:09

Definitely ask him!!

I have looked into that also. And I might yet use that option for some of the items, but they don't take sofas without a fire labels and I needed my cooker, fridge chucked too, so the dump the junk man is still needed anyway.

Ask him and also, if you post things on gumtree or Facebook marketplace and mark them as free people will happily come and collect.

I've done that with old furniture- always gone in a day or two.

11GrumpsaGrumping · 20/12/2021 16:30

Yes if he doesn't - freecycle or local fb group!

nokidshere · 20/12/2021 16:32

I asked all my friends/neighbours and family if they wanted anything from our (mil) stuff when I was clearing the house. No one was offended and I didn't have as much to get rid of at the end.
