AIBU in not letting my DC play out?

My dc has literally just turned 6.
We have a few main roads by us so I'm bit worried about letting him play out as he doesn't think about roads and the kids by us.... well their parents just let them out and don't keep a eye on them there's been a few incidents where I've nearly hit a toddler as they're running around in the road in their nappy type thing. (Didn't hit them as I'm not stupid enough to speed but there a lot of drivers who DO speed.)

His friends who are 5 are allowed to play out and their parents don't watch them and it's causing a lot of arguments at home as I just don't feel comfortable allowing him out.
Am I being unreasonable? Sad Not sure if I'm being over protective or just normal parenting?

If he has no traffic sense then please do not allow him out.

Tell him clearly why he isn't allowed out.

You are the parent what you says goes. He can go and have tantrums but until he is aware of vehicles he can't play out.

You sit on door step and watch him

Oh gosh no. I mean when he's learnt the safety of the roads, I wouldn't let him out just yet.

Just wondered what the normal age is to let them out on their own considering he's way to young to have a phone.

I live on a main road in London, no kids play out here including my own

Wouldn't work as his friends aren't on the same road as us and I don't trust their parents to watch him as they don't even watch their own! Blush

Around my area they tend to be 9+

Children only play on specific roads as the rest are very busy and most actually walk to one of the two playgrounds which both have fields/green areas next to them.

Under that age they play in gardens or have an adult accompany them to the playground.

I have three boys aged 19, 11 and 7. The 7 year old has friends round the house, in the garden or I go with him to the park. None of mine started to play out unattended until they were 9.

Do you live somewhere quiet/rural? 6 sounds very young to me (London) I haven't heard or seen of anyone's kids playing out at such a young age.

With a 6 year old?! The answer is no.

No way would I allow this. Plus I hope you’ve reported the family of the toddler alone in the road.

I can’t believe this is a thing.
