To sometimes see insomnia as a good thing?

Ok so I don't love feeling shattered all the time due to insomnia.
But I do sometimes like the extra time I get. Otherwise I'd never read MN or get through a book. Or think.
I wish I didn't have to sneak around while I'm awake and DH and DCs still asleep. Would be great if I could get the dishwasher sorted and do a bit of a workout!
Does anyone else kinda relish their insomniac hours? How can I use the time better so it becomes my superpower- whilst remaining warm and cosy for myself and quiet for the family?!

Yoga is quiet.

Yes, me! I have early waking insomnia. It's just the teenager in the house and he'd sleep through an earthquake so I can do as I please. I love the time just to sit with my thoughts and drink coffee but this weekend I decided to get productive and repainted my lounge! Started at 5am on Saturday and finished yesterday morning!

DrWankincense · 20/12/2021 07:05

Yes, I do find sometimes I enjoy the solitude of the easy hours. I'm lucky enough that it happens fairly sporadically. I read or I catch up with TV and drink cups of tea in peace.

*Early

mummagirl · 20/12/2021 07:06

Yep. Mine comes and goes. Menopausal. I chose to embrace it

BadPlaceJanet · 20/12/2021 07:09

I know what you mean. I do like the extra time (I just read or watch TV very quietly) but I'd still rather be sleeping, all things considered.

I've slept really well for a while now, but woke at 4 this morning 😭 I think it's because I ate Quality Street yesterday evening. Normally avoid chocolate that late.

Girlintheframe · 20/12/2021 07:13

I don't have insomnia but do wake ridiculously early 4.30/5am and I love it.
Having the extra time just makes my day so much more relaxed. I never feel rushed and flustered in the morning.

Corbally · 20/12/2021 07:17

No, my insomnia is definitely not a good thing. If I could choose a superpower, it would be to be one of those people who switches off the light, turns over and falls asleep effortlessly.

Chewbunn · 20/12/2021 07:18

No! You could do those things without having insomnia if you so wished. I hate it, I hate feeling shattered, I hate wasting time being awake whilst everyone else is asleep, when I was a bit younger lack of sleep led me to hallucinate and made me really poorly.

Squeezita · 20/12/2021 07:24

You could do a workout with those wireless sports ear buds hooked into your ears.

CrumblyCrimble · 20/12/2021 07:50

@Corbally @Chewbunn yes I hate it too. I'd rather sleep.

But this morning when my brain decided 4:30 is a good time to wake I caught myself thinking: oh good, now I have time to read all in Mumsnet AND get through a few chapters of the very long book I'm reading.

Thanks others for your take. I like the talk of choosing to embrace it. Better than lying here feeling frustrated and sorry for myself!

Sun's up!

Yes true, best to make the most of it as can't change it!

Insomnia rules my life.

I'm nervous about being able to fall asleep, which makes it harder to fall asleep. Then I always wake really early, anywhere from 3am onwards. So I think I need to get an early night to help, but then can't sleep.

Till it hits about 2PM and I'm desperate to sleep but working so I can't. But then worry that if I did nap, it would mean I couldn't sleep at night

sigh

However, being the only person downstairs..with the cats and a cuppa and the xmas lights on is quite pleasant.

Thay being said, I'd still rather be one of these people who can sleep for 10 hours a night. When I had covid it made me sleep, I was sleeping 14-15 hours and it was bloody brilliant!! Xmas Grin

Mercurial123 · 20/12/2021 09:21

No, I have primary insomnia which comes and goes. The nights are so long and starting work at 7 means I get very little sleep. Hate everything about it.
