To take the Night Nurse?

I am breastfeeding my youngest (almost 3) and I have a stinking cold.

Last night I took Night Nurse capsules, for the first time in approx 6 years (basically since I got pregnant with my eldest as I have either been pregnant or breastfeeding since). I still feel rough as a badger's arse tonight. WIBU to take Night Nurse again tonight?

My concerns are around the possibility of my breast milk drying up as a result of the decongestant ingredients. That's why I have avoided taking it up until this point. I don't know how likely that actually is to happen though.

I realise I probably sound deranged. I don't hate the idea of weaning at this point, but also don't really like the idea DC being weaned cold turkey if my milk did dry up suddenly. But also I feel really shite and the Night Nurse will help. Blush

Please no comments about DC being too old for nursing. That's not really what this post is about.

I would. While I have no opinion about you breastfeeding your toddler -- I would think that at least if it did effect your milk supply it wouldn't be a massive issue in terms of your DCs main food/nutrients.

You need to be taking care of yourself in order for you to take care of your children.

I would definitely take it.

Offmyfence · 19/12/2021 19:14

I'd take it, would I say to take it if you were feeding a 3 month old, probably not.

Glueberries · 19/12/2021 19:21

Night nurse doesn't actually contain a decongestant it contains paracetamol, promethazine (sedating antihistamine) and dextromethorphan (cough suppressant) so I wouldn't be concerned about it drying your milk up. It's only the day nurse capsules that contain a decongestant

LetsAllSpeakScience · 19/12/2021 19:23

If it makes you feel better then absolutely take it.

I did some proper research on this when I was ill and was suitability reassured that one dose wouldn't cause a problem with my 6 month old.

Your almost-3-year-old is at even less risk because they will be getting most of their calories from food and the nursing is mostly comfort, so if the supply dips a little temporarily, which isn't even guaranteed, they will be fine. The milk won't just stop that easily and if there is a drop in supply, it will return once you stop taking the decongestant.

At three the BFing is as established as it's possible to be so it's the best chance. I wouldn't with a 3 week/month old.

I suppose it boils down to cost;benefit. Would it be dreadful if you couldn't BF? No. Do you feel like shite? Yes. I would. I only BF until 14 months though (still late according to most) but I wouldn't have cared at that age.

In my experience, if you've breastfed for 3 years it'll take more than 2 doses of night nurse. I kept making milk for flipping ages after weaning!

MoonCowbag · 19/12/2021 19:40

@Glueberries really?! How have I been under the impression it contained a decongestant for so long? What a twit.

Thank you. You have all made me feel better about it. I do feel really

... posted too soon...

I do feel really rough and won't sleep well at all without it. I slept like a log last night, which was lovely!

its always best to speak to a pharmacist or read the patient info on medication during pregnancy or when bf just to be on the safe side

Your are at the stage now where your can miss a day or two, take lemsip, and your supply should be pretty much bomb proof. It was only for the first few months that I avoided decongestants. From about 6m I've done it, but only 1 or 2 a day, and until a yearish, I added on a pumping session to counteract it.
