Which is worse (Job Interview)

To be interviewed by people you know (ie your own senior managers) or total strangers you potentially never have to see again.

I am have an interview this week and will be my own management interviewing me and every time I think about it, I feel really really anxious about it and how it will be if I fuck it up and am unsuccessful. 🙈🙈🙈

I have one this week with my own managers and I’m dreading it. I think 100% worse with managers you know.

At least with strangers if it goes wrong you can walk away never to see them again. The thought of them all picking over what I’ve said makes me 🤮🤮 or worse being disappointed.

PinkiOcelot · 19/12/2021 17:54

Definitely worse with people you know I think.

Good luck to us both 😱😱😱😱

I'd much prefer to be interviewed by a stranger.

Good luck at your interviews.

gofigureit · 19/12/2021 18:10

You can't bullshit your own managers which is a bummer!

Besswess88 · 19/12/2021 18:22

This is it 🤣🤣🤣

People you know is MUCH worse!

UghFletcher · 19/12/2021 18:33

I recently interviewed internally, not with my direct team but with three managers I work very closely with as part of my current role.

It was awkward as hell 😆 I did get the role but I was convinced it was the worst interview I've ever done

girlmom21 · 19/12/2021 18:35

I actually think strangers is worse because your managers know whether you're capable of doing the job or not so even if you fuck up the interview theyll give you the benefit of the doubt

tealandteal · 19/12/2021 18:36

Would much prefer to be interviewed by a stranger. Don’t forget to still sell yourself and big up your achievements in front of your managers though, even if they already know about them they are still worth mentioning in interview.

NuNameNuMe · 19/12/2021 18:44

I've done a lot of internal recruitment lately and can say there's a big upside to the candidate. You are putting your CV, skills and experience right in front of your managers. If they started after you they may have no inkling of what you're capable of. If you're nervous, well it shows you care about this opportunity. It will show you in a positive light with or without being successful this time round.

I'd rather have strangers in case I have to - ahem - embellish my accomplishments! Grin

Bingo!

When I had a choice, I chose to have someone I didn’t know

Probably not the most sensible option but it meant I didn’t have to worry about someone I know judging me for my answers

CrappyXmasMarket · 19/12/2021 19:55

Before I got my current job I would have said I'd rather have strangers

But I knew the people interviewing me well, done loads of prep for it and I felt a lot more relaxed in the interview knowing the people I was presenting to wanted me to get the job if that makes sense.

I did have to remember to answer questions as if they didn't already know the scenarios, that felt a bit unnatural to start with!

Besswess88 · 19/12/2021 19:58

I have the first interview, I hope they did that to be kind to me.

You people actually have serious interviews with your own management?
This usually happens IME when interviews are merely a formality and job is guaranteed.

But then again we have a very flat structure

Besswess88 · 19/12/2021 20:33

I work for the local authority.

Definitely easier with strangers!

I’m applying for an internal promotion and I will know the people interviewing me, I’m dreading it. So much worse than when I came for my current job and didn’t know anyone🙈

Good luck to all having interviews, let’s hope we all rock them😍🤩

Years ago I had an interview with-then my current manager.

I don't know what I did wrong, everyone in the office said I was perfect for the role.. so I felt good before the interview.

We had the "interview" and she spent the whole time telling me the role was unsociable and not great because I was a single mum to two school aged children.

She knew I was in the office all day every day, it would have actually been a demotion but provided me with more stability as the my job was going to lead to redundancy after a couple of years,

I was able to get there an hour earlier than my current job (8am instead of 9am).... but she kept saying it's too much and she's been "a single mum"....

I never got the job, never explained to me why I didn't get it...

Instead I had to sit and watch her hire an outsider and train her up and it sucked.

I quit shortly after. It killed my confidence as I really did try to reassure her that I'd be able to do the role and just wanted stability for my kids.

Well yes. To avoid being accused of favouritism and unfairness in a process. There's nothing worse than finding out your colleague got a role that wasn't made public knowledge.

Every role in our organisation has to be advertised internally for 2 weeks before we even consider going external.

Not with my own management but with people who had moved to a new org and were recruiting
