Chickenpox & Flying

Posting for traffic. DS(5) has chicken pox, we’re on day 4 and due to fly early weds morning (22/12). NHS website says it’s non-contagious from day 5 but all other flight advice says you have to wait until last spot dries up.
Is it worth trying for a fit to fly note or should I just cancel? And if I cancel do we get the whole family holiday cost back or just for DS who can’t fly?
Bloody timing is awful.
YABU - get a fit to fly
YANBU - Cancel the holiday

@bumbleymummy

Are you in the U.K. *@MsAgnesDiPesto*? We don’t routinely vaccinate against CP here and most people have chickenpox when they’re a child so are immune as adults.
Yes I am, which is why I say that most adults will be unvacced, but anyone who didn’t get chickenpox as a kid is vulnerable. I found out when I got it that a surprising number of adults had escaped it as kids!

@StorminaBcup, if you have other children who havn’t had chicken pox, it’s worth bearing in mind that they are likely to get it 10-14 days later.

StorminaBcup · 20/12/2021 17:27

We’ve all had it. But we’re not going - managed to get a private GP appt to get a no fly letter (not many do paediatric appointments though so another surprisingly).

Thanks for all the advice. I’m off to cry into my wine over my first world problems. Roll on next year.

It's also very painful for adults AFAIK if they get shingles and they can be in bed for over a month.

So read your insurance, get a fly/no fly from a travel clinic. Sorry but well done for being considerate and Merry Christmas (eventually).

CoffeeMuggins · 20/12/2021 17:59

Sorry, OP. Better luck next year!

Datsandcogs · 20/12/2021 18:16

Get a sick note. Please don’t travel whilst they could be infectious. More than that they could contract Covid at the same time, keep home and stay safe.

Sorry you've had to cancel. DS2 just had chickenpox along with his whole nursery class. First spot on Thursday night and I would say by Tuesday they had all crusted over.

DH and DS1 have never had them so waiting to see if they've caught them. Just an FYI though - you cannot catch shingles from chickenpox. If an adult catches it, it's still chickenpox (although likely a worse dose than a child).

Oh how bloody disappointing Sad
Hope he's not too poorly with it and you get all your money back.

StorminaBcup · 20/12/2021 21:50

Thanks all.
Have started the ball rolling on reclaiming from insurance, total first world problems but just feel really sad for the boys after dropping hints. Never mind.

@AndrewPeacock I had no idea but apparently there’s outbreaks here (NW England) in the nursery’s. Hope your DS2 has been ok.
