To think that Scottish voters have just proved that Mumsnet is not transphobic

The Sunday Times is reporting a survey about gender issues that shows most people (Scottish voters to be precise) are, by trans rights activists' definition, transphobic.

For example, 86% believe that women and girls have the right to expect to be able to receive care, including intimate care, from biologically female staff in hospitals, care homes and rape crisis centres.

67% says transwomen with male genitalia shouldn't be allowed access to women's changing rooms, toilets etc.

TRAs love to paint Mumsnet as transphobic. I believe Mumsnet is a fairly accurate representation of the UK population's views on gender ideology but is one of the few places women can express their views anonymously without risking losing their jobs/being attacked on social media.

I wonder how many of the 33percent who would allow fully intact males into female changing rooms are men, and how many are women?

Moolia · 19/12/2021 07:52

Yes that would be an interesting statistic to know.

The Scottish poll result is about what I’d expect. I struggle to find anyone relatively normal who agrees with the TRA positions on this stuff. How they have managed to capture so many institutions in the face of public opinion is impressive in some ways, but sad in most.

RocketSurgeon · 19/12/2021 07:56

To see that approx a third of responders are for this it beyond my comprehension.

That can't possibly be truly representative of what a fair cross section of society thinks, can it? Sad

Perhaps as it was a FWS poll, the klaxon went out to TRAs and their hand maidens to respond?

It doesn't take a genius to work out who most of those people are though does it

I think transphobia arises when unacceptable terms and attitudes are used.

The same issues can be discussed, but one discussion can be appallingly bigoted and another absolutely fine.

So no, I don't agree that the survey exonerates MN or MNers from previous actual or potential future bigotry, transphobia or other unacceptable publication

Changecountetextraordinaire · 19/12/2021 08:03

I think the poll shows that most people, when the facts are given accurately (i.e. pretty much all transwomen have had no surgery and are fully male bodied) realise this rubbish for what it is.

But TRAs define transphobia as not treating transwomen in the same way as women. So by that definition the vast majority of people are transphobic.

Also, I've not seen transphobia or bigotry on mumsnet. When TRAs say this they can never identify the posts that are transphobic. And Mumsnet are very censorous on this topic.

What I see is women having intelligent and reasonable discussions about serious issues that have a massive impact on women and girls and being abused for it by being called bigoted and transphobic.

It’s a tried and true way of shutting down different opinions. Raise a concern about immigration = racist/xenophobe. Raise concern about this = transphobe. And repeat until they shut up as those labels are so damaging and the job’s a goodun.

I do think some people also live in an echo chamber. I know someone who only reads the Guardian and BBC and genuinely thinks everyone thinks the same as her.

OP posts:
DontBlameMe79 · 19/12/2021 08:29

Yes I agree re the echo chamber. I think a lot of TRAs can’t quite believe how successful they have been. I can imagine them getting together and saying “and you won’t believe what we’ve got them to agree to here…” and having a good laugh about it and coming up with the next even more outrageous demand.

Moolia · 19/12/2021 08:34

I'm not sure. I think they egg each other on so much that they actually genuinely think they are morally superior to anyone who doesn't believe you can magically change sex.
