Quick bit of advice needed, has anyone been given a notice before action for council tax that they have managed to dispute and recieved the money back?

Long story cut short the council are trying to charge me for a month's worth of council tax for when I moved into my new property and the dates aren't even correct and when i requested for my previous reminding council tax from last property to be transferred they didn't bother replying or even doing it. I pay yearly normally and they have now suggested I pay for it the full amount which is £229 with some extra charges for court or whatever but im worried what if i pay for it and then they don't investigate it properly or even pay me back?

If you are 100% that you owe nothing & can prove your efforts to resolve, let them take you to court. They will lose.

That's what we did, ours was with British Gas though rather than Council Tax but a similar problem to yours.

I use the Court system a lot for work, and Judges take a very dim view of people wasting their time like your Council would be

So did your tenancy end on the first property and start on the new one on the same day? Just checking because if for example your new tenancy agreement started on 1st but your old one didn't end until 10th so you moved on the 10th, you would still need to pay from the 1st for the new one. Was there any overlap?

I am now a student but wasn't at the month they are trying me for but now I am eligible for a discount as my partner works and earns a sufficient amount

Firstly separate out the dates- see other advice for that bit

Also now you're a student you need to ensure they have those details/ exemption -you don't pay anything, your partner however gets single persons discount. They can't issue CT in your name after you became FT student as you're now exempt
