Does anyone cook the turkey the day before..?

This is probably sacrilege, but it would make my life so much easier. There would be more room in the fridge and more room in the oven. And I'd have more down time.

Does anyone else do this?

p.s. I am a turkey virgin as we usually have goose which I always do the day before. I have reluctantly been persuaded by misguided 'traditionalists' to do turkey this year...

One year mysister and BIL who were 10 mins away on the car cooked the turkey and brought it with them. I did the starters, veggie options, stuffing , pigs in blankets , potatoes and veg etc , and desserts. It worked really well . You can definitely do the turkey early and being it out of the oven to rest before doing the potatoes and everything else

@BBCONEANDTWO

Do you heat it up on Christmas Day? If so how just 20 mins in th4e oven or something?
Usually slice up enough and cover it with gravy and heat in the oven. Putting the gravy in with it keeps it moist.

Just the two of us again this year so DH suggested having it cold with salad which seemed like a good idea. So it's salad for us this year.

I use the Nigella method, so it sits in a bucket of spiced brined water in the garage for 48hrs, until its read to go in the oven on Christmas day.

I don't mind cold turkey at all but reheated tastes really horrible to me.

BiteyShark · 22/12/2021 19:24

I always cook it before.

I get an extra large one and it is carved up with several portions frozen as there is only 2 of us and the dog.

We just have it cold with the veg and gravy on the day but we both like it that way. The dog isn't fussy either Grin

dementedma · 22/12/2021 19:25

Yup. Done it for years.

@Comefromaway

We don’t eat Sunday Dinner until 6-7pm. So we put the roast in Sunday morning. It’s usually cooked by 2pm & I pop it in the fridge until teatime.
really you shouldnt be putting it in the fridge until its cold... just cover it wtih layers of foil and a few clean tea towels and all the steam will drip back into it making it gorgeous and moist

non of us here like hot turkey so ours always gets cooked on christmas eve, (thanks for reminding me its time to get out the freezer to defrost) it makes for a more relaxed christmas morning and gives me more room in the oven for the rest of the stuff. the veg will have been prepared and placed into a large bucket of cold water, and the batter for the yorkshire will be in the fridge ready and waiting

mafted · 22/12/2021 19:35

PIL do this and serve it cold, it's not as nice and I really don't see the point.

LittleOwl153 · 22/12/2021 20:46

Ours gets prepped and oven set on a timer so it starts to cook very early in the morning, done for about 930/10...

PrincessNutella · 22/12/2021 22:19

I do not think it tastes as good the next day. I would not want to eat what tastes like leftover turkey for a holiday.
