My annoying eyes!!!!!

my vision sometimes goes double. It’s mostly when I’m reading up close- if I look at something far away it doesn’t happen. I can ‘make’ myself do it- if I look at something too hard/in a certain way(im not exactly sure how) I can easily make it split into 2. And I can focus and look at the fake/double image. But sometimes it happens accidentally, like if I’m reading and haven’t actually made it go double but my vision goes double anyway. My eyes are fine/no squint and I don’t need glasses and I know everyone can probably induce double vision on themselves, but I just wondered if anyone knew anything more about this and how to stop it happening accidentally. It’s getting annoying now- it doesn’t happen all the time but it’s very frequent where i’ll look at something up close or I’ll read something and my eyes slip into double vision. Thank you in advance Smile

You should go and have an eye test and optician will be able to check everything and tell you the cause.
There are very serious causes for sudden double vision so it’s definitely worth doing.
From your description I would guess it’s probably something called convergence insufficiency, which is not serious, but they would be able to give you some exercises to do to improve it.
Go to ideally an independent optician where they will have time to investigate it properly, talk you through the exercises if needed and review you at later date.

Thanks, I probably didn’t explain it very well but it’s actually been going on for a while, I just thought it was normal. I remember from when I was a child that if I was reading I could do something with my eyes (not sure what exactly!) and it would make everything go double. I thought it was cool but now I’m an adult it’s started getting in the way as when I look at things up-close i seem to be accidentally making it double. If I blink and ‘reset’ my eyes it seems to go away and then when I get tired I find my eyes just slip into the double vision again. It’s so annoying but I had my eyes tested recently and they said I don’t have a squint or any problems! Also incase it’s relevant, when I do the thing with my eyes that makes them go double, my eyes don’t physically squint at all, they don’t look any different when I’ve got double vision

i have this and its a convergance difficency. i get prisms from the orthoptics department as part of the eye clinic at the hospital (i also see the main eye clinic for another reason) mine wasnt picked up when i was a child even though i complained a lot about it

It sounds normal to me. Everyone's vision goes double when looking at things close up don't they?

How often does it happen accidentally?

DoNotGetADog · 19/12/2021 00:37

I still think it’s what I said above - convergence insufficiency. It isn’t a squint as such, and they just may not have picked it up. Did you explain to the optician the exact symptoms you have?
