To ask whether you had this bizarre school dinner dish & if anyone knows what it is called

It was round breaded meat (no idea what meat it was) and inside it was filled with baked beans like a weird kind of chicken Kiev.

This was a regular dish at my school in South London in the early 90s. Never seen it anywhere else. Occasionally, we would also have smaller versions filled with ketchup. Although, I think they may have been sold in supermarkets.

Was anyone else served this at school? Or have any other tales of weird school dinners?

I miss the various types of custard. Standard yellow custard, pink custard and chocolate custard.

We also used to have a dessert called coffee and biscuits, which what I assume to be decaffeinated coffee-style hot drink and weird rusk-like biscuits.

fetchacloth · 19/12/2021 17:23

I've no idea but it sounds utterly gross 😝😩

Yespresh · 19/12/2021 17:24

Findus pancakes?

notbloodylikely · 19/12/2021 17:32

Two horrible standout puddings:
tinned apricot and prunes with some kind of spray cream which we called shaving foam.
Strawberry blancmange/mousse, sitting on top of stewed apple, with cornflakes pressed in to the mousse. A bit like a hedgehog.

TheWitchOfShields · 19/12/2021 17:37

We called them 'Beanies' at school, also had mince rounders - was minced beef in gravy, surrounded by mashed potato and then breadcrumbs. They were surprisingly nice.

I miss old school dinners - the chicken casserole with cheese scone was a favourite, and sausage pie Smile

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 19/12/2021 17:39

Sounds like a savoury pancake! Bird's eye special?

Jamontoast87 · 19/12/2021 17:44

@frightmare I think they were called Rounders, or something like that. I remember them!

JustJustWhy · 19/12/2021 17:50

I used to LOVE these squares our school canteen made. They were all yesterday's cakes mushed together in a square and topped with cheap chocolate. Honestly, I'd eat almost anything though so I loved school dinners!

SheeceRearsmith · 19/12/2021 17:51

Weird! We had a breaded potato cake filled with beans called a Potato Beano. This was the late 90s.

angela99999 · 19/12/2021 17:53

@sadpapercourtesan

No, never had it - it sounds gross, frankly

My "weird school dinner item" to contribute: Surf Burgers. They consisted of a round, fat little puck made of the worst kind of fishcake innards - grey, rubbery, ulcerine - which had been battered instead of breaded. Soggy, smelly and utterly inedible. Circa 1987.

"Surf burgers", ugh, sounds like coley, now disguised as "pollock", grey when cooked and it always smells FOUL. I'm older and remember being given mince on toast, and also the dreadful spam fritter, in the 1960's.
Duchess379 · 19/12/2021 17:57

Bean Buster?! Basically a scotch egg but with beans inside, instead?

Creativenina · 19/12/2021 18:13

When I was really young about 5 or 6 years old I went to a private school. They served us children spam, mash and baked beans which I actually enjoyed. They used to have left over food occasionally and mixed everything up in a big saucepan and offered it to us if we were still hungry. This consisted of mash potato, mince meat, peas, pasta, baked beans and peas. It sounds weird but I used to love it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/12/2021 18:30

I didn’t like many of the dinners at school and took packed lunch as a soon as allowed. The particular low points were chicken Maryland and tinned prunes.

FredJonesPt2 · 19/12/2021 18:30

No, never had what you described. We had 'curry', which was boiled white rice with curry powder filled raisins!!! I thought I didn't like curry for years.

Viviennemary · 19/12/2021 18:31

Bean rounder definitely rings a bell.

Slimemonster · 19/12/2021 18:53

Luncheon meat - served in the North of England in the early 90's vile stuff.
Puddings were always nice, the lucky kid always got the custard skin too 🤣

ThePlumVan · 19/12/2021 19:07

@EdinaMonsoon yes ! Never seen it anywhere since either. I can see it now in the big silver trays and the strainer.
They put it with lots of things but I quite liked it Grin

Justaflippertyjibbet · 19/12/2021 19:15

My school pompously called a Spam fritter with a pineapple chunk…
Haiwian Grill

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 19/12/2021 19:20

My most dreaded meal of the week was cheese puffs. It was puff pastry baked with some sort of artificial, really horrible tasting cheese. They were doughy and unpleasant. Worst of all, they were the alternative meal on pizza day, so if you were on one of the classes that got to the canteen later, it was cheese puffs or nothing.

Of course, the pizza was dreadful too. It was some weird soggy dough spread on a big rectangular pan with some bland concoction that tasted like plain tinned tomatoes and a bit of cheddar. Still the highlight of the week.

We also had a terrible curry that was served occasionally with raisins and fruit in it. Was really sweet and unpleasant and came with starchy white rice.

LlamaParma · 19/12/2021 19:21

Baked bean rounder. Surprisingly tasty

youcantchoosethem · 19/12/2021 19:23

Hated spam fritters (sorry PP’s!) and liver & bacon and rice pudding/semolina/tapioca 🤢 loved chocolate sponge and chocolate custard, Fridays for fish and chips, and the wednesday roast! At our primary school (mid 70’s) we couldn’t leave the table until we had finished all our dinner so on days there was something you didn’t like you made a bee line for “fat Lucy” and she would finish off your plate! How horrendous looking back!!

Vanishun · 19/12/2021 19:29

Oh I remember those tiny microwave pizzas - the ones that taste like cardboard with ketchup over it, that burned your mouth when you hit into them? I think they were the cheapest thing our school sold.

I remember mostly trying to save my lunch money at high school and skip it as we weren't well off. I was so hungry all the time but mostly was used to it. I could save up to £5 a week which was huge back then.

LisaD76 · 19/12/2021 19:29

It’s a sausage meat and bean rounder… they sold them in beejams and I loved them

Comedycook · 19/12/2021 19:33

I honestly think there was less obesity then because the food was so unappetising.

Scottsy100 · 19/12/2021 21:21

No idea I went to Primary school in the 80’s and we had an orange bread crumbed meat thing but it never had any kind of beans or Kiev scenario in and we called that a “choppy” 🙈😂
