AIBU to want some affordable plastic free toiletries?

I don't need anything vegan or home made or with fancy oils. Just basic stuff to keep myself and my family clean. I've switched to soap bars from the supermarket but I don't understand why manufactures don't produce shampoo and other cleaning products to a scale that would bring prices down. The cheapest plastic free deodorant I've found is £5 for 60g. And not even antiperspirant. Shampoo bars cost even more. I am fedup of companies claiming to be sustainable and something so basic as supplying resoanable priced plastic free toiletries can't be done?

YANBU.
I have limited funds so can’t shop as plastic free as I’d like.
H & B have some offers on. Faith in nature shampoo bar is down to £4.34. Still a lot more expensive than a bottle of shampoo though.

Are you comparing like with like though? I bought a shampoo bar a few months ago and it’s still going strong. I would have got through a whole bottle of shampoo in a similar time frame.

HerbivorousRex · 18/12/2021 15:36

Garnier Ultimate blends shampoo bar is about £3.99 in Superdrug (although they often have offers on so you could stock up when it’s cheaper).
Or if you’re willing to use Amazon then Eco Warrior make lots of different bar toiletries, that are 100g and only £3 each www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08285QVPD?linkCode=osi&psc=1&ascsubtag=1819177_B08285QVPD&th=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Although it’s more expensive than bottled shampoo I find bar shampoo lasts a lot longer.

‘Wild’ deodorant isn’t super cheap but it does last a long time and it’s the only refillable/natural deodorant/antiperspirant I’ve found that actually works (although I do still have a stick of Mitchum for days when I need super strong antiperspirant).

You’re definitely not being unreasonable though- it should be much easier to find a wide range of cleaning products and toiletries that are in sustainable packaging and are still reasonably priced.

Foamie conditioner bar is good and lasts ages.

DirectionToPerfection · 18/12/2021 15:40

I agree OP. Hopefully it's only a matter of time before the other major brands copy Garnier and produce shampoo bars.

Nsky · 18/12/2021 15:46

I buy bio d handwash, buy in 5 litre containers, 500 mls is about £4, 5 litres just over £20.
Never buy conditioner use eggs and olive oil.
Shampoo bars readily available too

FootieMama · 18/12/2021 15:54

Thanks for the replies. I will check the garnier shampoo bar. Posted after another frustrating online search for afordable products. Somehow the garnier bar didn't appear at all on my search

@Nsky, I've thought about buying the 5l handwash bottles. But it is still a lot of plastic. Instead I've switched to soapbars for hand-wash too.

Whatever suits, I buy all my cleaning in 5 litres, washing liquid the works, and I prefer liquids

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/12/2021 16:18

If you go to the zero waste network you should be able to find a shop that does refill options near you.

EezyOozy · 18/12/2021 18:05

Check out Soap for Little Suds

Frazzled50yrold · 18/12/2021 19:18

Holland and Barrett reduce their items to 90% off when they're at their sell by date. It's been a great way of trying out shampoo bars etc. The moisturizer bars were horrendous, not even worth the 90% off price.

RandomCatGenerator · 18/12/2021 19:21

I totally agree OP!! Was just thinking this the other day.

And posters saying shampoo bars last longer than liquid - I must be doing something wrong? Mine definitely don’t 😕

FangsForTheMemory · 18/12/2021 19:27

You can buy Faith in Nature stuff in Oxfam shops, and there's a shampoo bar for about £5. As a previous poster said, bar shampoos last ages.

thewhatsit · 18/12/2021 19:31

the-good-soap.co.uk/ for deodorant.

It’s bloody brilliant. The bars last ages, multiple months. I haven’t used any other deodorant for 2.5 years.

Notdoingthis · 18/12/2021 19:41

Home Bargains has a shampoo bar for £1.99

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 18/12/2021 20:03

YANBU.

For deodorant I recommend Salt Of The Earth deodorant crystal, and sometimes you can get them in a cardboard box instead of a plastic case. They last for ages and ages (as long as you don’t drop it!).

hotmeatymilk · 18/12/2021 20:09

@thewhatsit Cheers for that recommendation! Looks far more bang for buck than Wild, which I had been using.

Toothpaste is the one I’m having difficulty with. Everything’s so expensive! Currently using Boca’s refill subscription system which is fine but I’ll die penniless.

NannyR · 18/12/2021 20:14

I can also recommend the crystal stone deodorants, they last for years and work brilliantly (for me), they only stop odour though, not sweating.

silentpool · 18/12/2021 20:32

Crystal deodorants and shampoo bars last for ages. There are also various ways to go shampoo free - your hair adjusts...

Most of my cleaning is now done with a simple homemade spray, which is pennies to make. With a few simple base ingredients in the house, you can clean everything (baking soda, washing soda, dishwashing liquid/castile soap, white vinegar, citric acid being the main ones).

Lots of ideas on various zero waste blogs on making skin care/home care products for very little.

TractorAndHeadphones · 18/12/2021 21:10

YANBU toothpaste is hard to find as well

DockOTheBay · 18/12/2021 21:17

Alberto Balsam do a shampoo bar in Asda. Their products are usually very reasonable. I think the shampoo bar was about £2

Salt of the Earth have a plastic free crystal deodorant for about £5, which really does last a long time. Months and months. Can be found in amazon, holland and barrett etc.

I'd given up on finding plastic-free toothpaste, so am waiting eagerly to hear more.

Mary46 · 18/12/2021 21:43

Im not mad on shampoo bars as my hair v thick so I need good bit. So I go back to shampoo again! Better lather for me

Roundles · 18/12/2021 22:11

You need your closest zero waste shop, and of course a little extra time to account for going there. I fill my shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, cooking oils, peanut butter, cereals, flours, body lotion..
