DH has sent off a PCR yesterday, will the first results say if it’s omicron or are the omicron results sent separately?

My dad had an initial email/text to say he was covid positive. A day later he had a phonecall to advice him it is suspected omicron and asked for t&t details

Tillsforthrills · 18/12/2021 10:10

@rooarsome

Thanks for that. If it’s omicron it’ll affect our Xmas as that’s the variant that’s evading vaccinations and even boosters.

Dreading that Sad

Are they telling everyone? I didn’t think they tested all samples for variant, for speed purposes… so you might not know. But I don’t know if that’s changed with Omicron.

IgneousRock · 18/12/2021 10:12

Won't it affect your Christmas even if not omicron as your DH will still be in the isolation period?

Tillsforthrills · 18/12/2021 10:24

@IgneousRock

With the current rules, it will affect his Xmas but not necessarily mine. I’d prefer to SI if it’s omicron though to safeguard family.

MarcelineMissouri · 18/12/2021 10:25

Are they still telling people? I thought it was already the majority of cases so it seems a bit pointless!

Its not evading vaccines and boosters.

SunnyLeaf · 18/12/2021 10:27

They rang you initially but now it’s such a big percentage of cases I don’t think they’re telling people anymore

Onehotmess · 18/12/2021 10:29

We’ve had 4 positive tests in our house and no notification of which variant (nor did I expect it?) I think they only test where they have the facility to do that. To be honest it really doesn’t matter now. There are no additional rules for different variants, all the rules and guidelines are the same.

troppibambini6 · 18/12/2021 10:30

So if it's omicron the whole family has to isolate?
If it's delta they don't?
Is that right? If it is then surely you have to know...

troppibambini6 · 18/12/2021 10:30

Sore cross post I have it wrong I think.

Tillsforthrills · 18/12/2021 10:31

@troppibambini6

You don’t have to SI with any variant in England now.

OP posts:
musicalfrog · 18/12/2021 10:32

It kind of matters because if your current infection is delta then you're likely to also catch Omicron at some point soon and could take additional measures to protect yourself.

We've not been informed either way with ours.

Roomba · 18/12/2021 10:33

DS1's classmate got his PCR result back via email and text as usual. Then he was phoned next day by test & trace, who advised it was Omicron.

DS1 had eaten lunch with the lad the day before he tested positive, and sat in classes all day with him. But school decided DS wasn't a close contact so didn't have to isolate! This was just before the rule change requiring daily LFTs instead if vaccinated (DS is only half vaccinated but let's ignore that too). No wonder it is rampant in schools.

^When you do not need to self-isolate If you live with or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, you will not need to self-isolate if any of the following apply^

you're fully vaccinated – this means 14 days have passed since your final dose of a COVID-19 vaccine given by the NHS

you're under 18 years and 6 months old

you're taking part or have taken part in an approved COVID-19 vaccine trial

you're not able to get vaccinated for medical reasons

Even if you do not have symptoms, you're strongly advised to

^do daily rapid lateral flow tests (1 a day for 7 days), if you’re fully vaccinated, to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 - find out more about daily testing on GOV.UK
follow advice on how to avoid catching and spreading COVID-19^

consider limiting contact with people who are at higher risk from COVID-19

Those are the current rules for any variant. Personally though I think it's really irresponsible to not isolate if you can

montysma1 · 18/12/2021 10:46

My friend and husband were notified it was omicron.

Biscuitsneeded · 18/12/2021 10:53

I suspect they have already given up testing all positives and notifying. DS has covid currently (day 8 and actually feeling fine now) and my gut says omicron. Scratchy throat, chills and aches but no loss of smell or taste and no cough. Plus our local rates have tripled in the space of about 10 days and we aren't that far from London. Got to be omicron, no? Am kind of hoping it is, because then at least he's had it.

Tillsforthrills · 18/12/2021 10:54

@Roomba

The notifying of Omicron seems very patchy, some getting notified and others not. Sorry about your DC coming into contact with it.

Changeisneeded · 18/12/2021 10:57

I am sure I caught omicron but tested positive after the isolation rule change and haven’t been notified of it yet (none of those with me have either)

This is what I’m worried about. Currently positive, in London.

Now can’t get a booster for 28 days so what if it isn’t Omicron??

Changeisneeded · 18/12/2021 11:00

Just to add 5 out of 6 of us were triple jabbed the 6th was double jabbed and 2 of those had previously caught covid before.
