To get him checked by the GP anyway?

My son has had a temp for a week. It's not getting any better and if anything seems to be getting more frequent so I had booked him a GP appointment but ended up not actually making it because his temp rose to nearly 40 and he went blue. An ambulance came and he was taken to hospital. By the time we got there he'd returned to normal colour thankfully and seemed a bit chirpier and we waited for 5 hours to see the doctor who basically just said "virus, give Calpol and ibuprofen for 4 days, you can go home".

I'm so worried they've missed something. His temp was again up in the high 39s last night even 2.5 hours after his most recent dose of Calpol, he's always topped up with Calpol/Ibuprofen but by the time he's due his next one he's already got a fever, he's constantly without clothes at the moment and it just doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

I asked if it could possibly be bacterial and need antibiotics (no one else in the house is ill) and he has no symptoms except the temp and sleeping more but he waved that off, they did no tests for anything just stated it was a virus and that's that.

I know it probably is but I'm so worried. I have an amazing GP who actually works at the children's hospital 2 days a week, she's so good and I know she'll take more time to properly check him over. Even though I've been to the hospital I'm thinking of getting him to see her on Monday anyway if things don't improve? I wish I'd just gone to see her anyway!

I've not slept because I'm so worried about him.

Could be PIMS or sepsis - keep giving Calpol/Calprofen, and watch him like a hawk. If he deteriorates at all go to A&E or ring 999.

Can you call for an out of hours GP appointment?

Take him to GP. Get GP to look in his ears and throat and do a urine test. Good luck!

SilverSandStorm · 18/12/2021 11:57

I agree at 10 months old and with no ear/throat examination I'd want him seen again and checked more thoroughly.

I see someone else has mentioned UTI. When my daughter was 2 the only symptom she had was raging temperature, she also went to hospital by ambulance and her oxygen levels had dropped. She was immediately treated with antibiotics and UTI was suspected and then confirmed.

She also turned blue, it’s very frightening.

loopyapp · 18/12/2021 12:14

Absolutely no way I'd be accepting that with a child as small as yours.

Doctors get it wrong, we don't need to argue the reasons why or debate the dramatic underfunding of A&E departments but we can all agree sending a baby away with the symptoms yours has was a gross mistake

romdowa · 18/12/2021 12:16

I'd be taking him straight back to a n e and I wouldn't leave until they at least run some basic tests.

Definitely go back. I took DS to A&E after four days of a cough and temperature - the dr there said any temp that won’t go down after 48hrs you need to see a medical practitioner. He diagnosed DS viral pneumonia which required an overnight stay. He said upon discharge that if the temperature returned I was to bring him back in (it didn’t, thank god!).
They need to rule out anything nasty that’s causing his temperature.
Although the dr did also say that a temp is the body’s natural way of fighting infection and if baby is happy in himself, that’s a good sign.
Is your LO eating and drinking?

Hope everythung is ok x

myyellowcar · 18/12/2021 18:16

OP take him back to A&E this weekend.

You’re worried, you know something isn’t right. Don’t wait while Monday.

MadeForThis · 18/12/2021 18:24

If you aren't happy go back to A&E.
