Advice - toddler diarrhoea

Hi everyone. I'm just looking for some advice, I'll also call the doctor in the morning.

My toddler, almost two, has never had a stomach upset before. So I'm not sure what to do.

It started Monday/ Tuesday with just sneezing and a runny nose. Then she had quite a high temperature I Tuesday night and a little bit Wednesday too.

Thursday I thought she had recovered, no temperature and no runny nose. Yay !

Thursday night she had what I think was a bit of diarrhoea. It smelled different but was mainly pasty. It was a bit liquid and went on her sleeping bag.

Friday morning it happened again. Friday she didn't really want to eat much. Then she had a burp after a lot of water and toast and brought up some food.

Put her to bed Friday night. Came in about 15 minutes later and she was completely soaked with diarrhoea. She also had a fever. So I changed her and gave her some paracetamol.

She slept all night and woke up at 6 this morning completely soaked again. I cleaned her up and I'm just trying to get her to go back to bed.

I've been trying to give her water but she's not that up for it. I know dehydration is the biggest risk now.

Any advice ?

For what it's worth, I also had a stomach upset yesterday. It was minor though. And I do frequently get these as I'm pregnant and go between severe constipation and the opposite. Sorry TMI. So I'm unsure if these things are linked.

Could it be caused by teething in my girl ? Or just some sort of virus?

DS has had a few stomach bugs recently (he's 2.5), I spoke to the Dr last time and it can last up to 10 days.

Like you say, it's dehydration they're concerned about - could you try offering her squash or ice lollies? Fruit juice not recommended.

My dr is very good about getting me an appt (usually on the phone) when it comes to DS so worth calling if you're worried,

My daughter had a tummy ache, temperature and bad headache when she had covid.

Keep an eye on her and make sure she is hydrated as young kids can get dehydrated quite quickly. My 9 month old was hospitalised after 1.5 days of diarrhoea as he was severely dehydrated. He was still drinking.

I'll definitely call 111 today, as the GP is closed.

She doesn't actually drink anything but water and milk. I'll try and give her ice lollies. I doubt she'd drink those rehydration sachets.

I heard you shouldn't give milk when they have stomach issues.

Don't give her dairy if she has a bad stomach and is being sick it will make it worse. X

ItsSnowJokes · 18/12/2021 08:05

I would be getting her a covid test with those symptoms. Upset stomach is one of the top symptoms for kids.

Instead of plain water offer her weak squash or even better, diarolyte (can't spell it!) to help with dehydration.

Only offer her food if hungry and then make it bland food (toast, rice, banana, crackers etc).

Keep up with the calpol etc if she needs it.

Wishing her a speedy recovery x

Ok, it might as well be said. She had a temperature. Have you done a covid PCR test?

Fluids. Ice lollies are sometimes sucessful. Dilute fruit juice - although I note someobecabove has said not to. Food with water - cucumber, melon......

No. Might do one today. If I did one for every temperature, I would be constantly testing her. And I'm not doing that to my child. Especially because she's not at nursery now and we don't go out or see anyone when she's unwell anyway.

My DS had a fever and diarrhea two weeks ago. There are still bugs other than covid around!

I agree with Sam - lots of liquid and bland food.

Sounds a lot like my DDs Covid
