... to have had head lice for weeks?

I'm a mum of four, so have had much experience over the years with treating head lice. My kids are all older now and haven't had them for years ... but I do Sad I work in a primary school.
I don't know if there is a 'super lice' currently on the go, but I cannot shift these at all. I am embarrassed to say that I've had them for weeks or even months.
Hedrin used to always be my 'go to' treatment, and it worked extremely effectively. Not any more. I've been leaving it on overnight (8 hours plus), washing it out in the morning, and by the following day my head and neck feel like a pin cushion Sad It goes without saying that I've had several treatments.
I have also used a nitty gritty comb but have post-Covid hair loss, and the fine combing is wreaking havoc on my hair.
In my years, I have never experienced anything like this. None of my colleagues have mentioned getting them, and it feels like it's just me.
I don't think I'm being reinfected repeatedly. Logistics would suggest not.
This is really getting me down. Does anyone have any advice? I'm in Scotland - not sure if it's a regional issue!
Thanks.

Just looked it up you need a product with dimeticone it coats their body and they suffocate. It doesn't kill the eggs though just makes them easier to remove hence the repeated treatment.

My mum did conditioner with nit comb every single night until two nights clear and then could go to every other night and after two clear of that could go to twice a week.
Worked every time.
The time I had them as an adult I died my hair which expedited the process.

One of my DDs was really susceptible to them right into adult hood. Using the hairdryer instead of leaving to dry naturally killed the fuckers off, after years and years old failure frustration and chemical treatments all to no avail.

So I definitely go along with the use heat on your hair theory.

I used to suffer from getting them, I found hedrin etc don’t work at all for me.
I use listerine original mouthwash and leave it on over night and wash off and do it every other night for a week.
That’s my go to treatment for myself and my girls and it’s a lot cheaper than hedrin

I’ve also changed to tea tree shampoo and conditioner and not had them since I switched.

I was always that kid at school that would catch them and struggle to get rid of them!

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/12/2021 10:04

Just use gold listerine must be the gold one. Soak hair cover with shower cap , rinse in 90 mins and repeat it 7 days to kill any tiny live that hatch from the eggs that the listerine doesn’t kill. It’s highly effective and will kill every single lice.

I cut all my hair off then Hedrin'd. It was all that got rid of the bastards.

I’d comb every morning and night with conditioner and nitty gritty comb. If I found anything I’d keep going until I had a combed the full head and found nothing.

Also had an electronic comb from boots. Although that was when we stopped getting nits! Buy one as a lucky charm!

Just echoing a few people - you might still have them but possibly the itching is something else now.

I had them so bad as a child I was terrified of getting f them again, as soon as I hear the word lice my whole head goes on fire! My child had a note from school about an outbreak recently, and my head instantly started itching and it took 3 weeks before it stopped!

Jimjamjong · 19/12/2021 10:12

Try rinsing your hair with vinegar, that's how I shifted them for my sister. I used the strongest vinegar I could find (alcohol vinegar) and as I was rinsing I could see them in the bathtub.
The vinegar smells goes away as the hair dries and it acts as a repellent.

Alberto balsam tea tree conditioner, full bottle or 2 if you have long thick hair and nut comb every last one out + eggs.

If you’re desperate could buy some essential
Oil drops from Superdrug they hate the smell!

MushMonster · 19/12/2021 10:36

You need someone to check that you do have lice indeed.
Check if you have eggs left behind, one of my friends got a nasty infection and the eggs were quite a thing, even if the lice itself was dead.
Tea tree oil products shall sort the lice, vinegar rinses should sort the eggs.
Surely the pharmacist can give you something stronger if needed?

Reallybadidea · 19/12/2021 10:38

If you're not finding any live ones when you comb and your mum can't see any, then you probably don't have them anymore. Just the thought of them makes my head itch though and if you scratch then you release histamine, which actually makes you more itchy! I'd try an antihistamine and try very hard not to scratch.

Hair straighteners. Listen for the pop as the eggs burn Grin
