Santa vs father Christmas

Blinkingheckythump · 17/12/2021 23:18

I know it's totally unimportant and hence iabu but it really irks me that everything seems to be santa these days and not father Christmas. It was always father Christmas when I was growing up. I miss it! Why has it changed over time? I say father Christmas to the kids but they hear santa everywhere else so usually say santa themselves. Am I being unreasonable in wishing it was still father Christmas?!

Incase it needs clarifying, this is very lighthearted. I'm aware it's not really an issue

I just don’t like Father Christmas it sounds horrible

Starcaller · 17/12/2021 23:22

Always Santa in Scotland although DD has picked up Father Christmas from Peppa Pig Grin

Lagomtransplant · 17/12/2021 23:23

Is this another "ooh, look at me, I'm such a wonderful example of mumsnet MC" windup?

It's your opinion. Sometimes, opinions are like farts. You really want to keep them to yourself.

TwinklyBranch · 17/12/2021 23:23

Father Christmas sounds horribly old fashioned/posh to me. He's always been Santa to me and I'm in my 40s!

DropYourSword · 17/12/2021 23:23

Much prefer Santa over Father Christmas

dementedpixie · 17/12/2021 23:24

Always been Santa where I am in Scotland

DaisyWaldron · 17/12/2021 23:24

I (Irish) say Santa Claus, as it was when I was growing up, and when my parents and grandparents were growing up. DH (from Hertfordshire) says Father Christmas, which is what he grew up with. Our children use them both interchangeably.

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 17/12/2021 23:24

Does your father Christmas bring presents?

Festivemoose · 17/12/2021 23:25

I prefer Father Christmas 🎅

elQuintoConyo · 17/12/2021 23:25

We say Father Christmas because we're in Spain and it's the direct translation of Papa Noel.

¡Feliz Navidad!

belimoo · 17/12/2021 23:25

I'm with you op, it's Father Christmas. Santa to me is the marketing Coca Cola version whereas Father Christmas is from my magical childhood.

I'm sure I'm wrong though and there's nothing wrong with Santa. I just have a personal reference for Father Christmas because of nostalgia.

Hospedia · 17/12/2021 23:26

It's always been Santa/Santa Claus/Santy here in NE England, even back when my mum was a little girl.

gogohm · 17/12/2021 23:26

Father Christmas, Midlands

Bitofachinwag · 17/12/2021 23:26

Father Christmas. I think it's the American influence that has made more people say Santa now ( yes I know it's always been Santa in Scotland, but most English people are more influenced by American culture than Scottish culture!)

BeardieWeirdie · 17/12/2021 23:26

I’m with you and say Father Christmas - I hate Santa. I’m in North Wales and everyone says Sion Corn (Chimney Sion).

EdinaMonsoon · 17/12/2021 23:27

I can’t stand Santa. It’s an ugly sounding word & I have an irrational hatred of it, along with the word “Xmas”. Maybe because it seems lazy? Or akin to some marketing crap made up by people who consider themselves too cool for tradition? 🤔😆Father Christmas on the other hand is perfect. It sounds wholesome.

MissM2912 · 17/12/2021 23:28

Santa in NI.

PestoSugarPlumFairy · 17/12/2021 23:28

He has always been Father Christmas to me and always will be but I’m afraid YABU.

These threads come up every year. Hold tight for “why do we have to copy America?” followed by “it was Santa in Ireland/Scotland before America” 😆

Mrsjayy · 17/12/2021 23:29

As pp have said its Santa Claus in Scotland we don't say father Christmas here is nothing to do with coca cola Hmm

MrsBungle · 17/12/2021 23:30

Santa Claus to me. My granny called him Santa too so not a new thing at all.

Ljmumun · 17/12/2021 23:31

Another for Santa here . Been Santa for 50 years. I'm scottish live in England. Used to drive English MIL mad that her grandchildren used Santa not Father Christmas. Both kids still use Samta as does DH now. Pp nothing to do with coke!

TrashyPanda · 17/12/2021 23:31

It hasnt changed in the last 100 years here

It was Santa then and it’s Santa now.

Never heard anyone in Scotland refer to Father Christmas.

FC sounds so formal and unfriendly. Santa is warm and cuddly.

MaskingForIt · 17/12/2021 23:33

It’s just a signifier of class in England. MC or UMC say Father Christmas, WC or LMC say Santa.

LagunaBubbles · 17/12/2021 23:33

I'm 51 and never said Father Christmas in my life, always Santa.

Bratnews · 17/12/2021 23:35

Father Christmas sounds awful - hated it when we had the DC and my in-laws used Father Christmas! Always Santa.
