to think that £20 for 8 hours babysitting isn't great?

My daughter is almost 18 and has agreed to babysit tonight for someone on our street from 5pm until 1am and she's received twenty quid for the 8 hours. Is this a reasonable rate? We're in the Midlands? She should have agreed a rate beforehand, I know, but she didn't as she's squirmy talking about money to people. What's a reasonable rate for her to ask for in future? She's on over £6 per hour in her part-time pub job, washing up and collecting dishes.

20 quid?! Surely they know they are taking the absolute piss with that??

ProudThrilledHappy · 17/12/2021 20:17

I used to get £20 to babysit my neighbours kids from 9pm to 1am in 1997!!

RandomUsernameHere · 17/12/2021 20:18

That's ridiculous. We pay £10 an hour minimum.

Hall84 · 17/12/2021 20:18

I haven't read thread yet but recently paid £40 for 3 and a tiny bit hours and paid taxi home as we couldn't drive

MorganKitten · 17/12/2021 20:19

I did 7pm - 2am the other night, £80 and they sorted me a cab home.

NothingIsWrong · 17/12/2021 20:20

Fuck that, I paid £35 for 4.5 hours last weekend.

hedgehogger1 · 17/12/2021 20:21

I used to get more than that per hour over 20 years ago

Danikm151 · 17/12/2021 20:22

I used to get £20 a night at 16 for putting the kids to bed at 8. Free reign of the computer/tv and sleep in. I’d get a lift home in the morning. That was 14 years ago though!

If she had to entertain the kids/cook and put them to bed then definitely more than £20

Rexthesnail · 17/12/2021 20:22

I once baby sat from 5pm- 3am. I got £3. That was it. Came home, cried, slept a couple of hours and then did a GCSE exam.

Animood · 17/12/2021 20:24

Absolute piss take that.

She should not go back again.

feedmemincepies · 17/12/2021 20:24

I pay £9 an hour (and usually round it up) but the person we have is fully qualified nursery manager, first aid qualified etc. We met her through nursery and the kids really like her so it works for us all.
I would pay £5 an hour for a young teenager (15yo), somewhere inbetween for older teen or other adult.

elbea · 17/12/2021 20:25

We pay £10 an hour and provide, dinner and snacks. £20 is outrageous

Did she agree to that rate in advance? If she didn't, I'd tell her to call them and say she's feeling unwell and they need to come.

Cheap people

hivemindneeded · 17/12/2021 20:26

I used to pay £5 ph 15 years ago and felt a bit cheapskate even then.

hivemindneeded · 17/12/2021 20:27

@MadameGazelleband

Jesus we pay £20 an hour! YANBU
For a babysitter? That's too much
ShirleyPhallus · 17/12/2021 20:27

I’d say to them “really sorry but there was some confusion about the fee - it’s £60, not £20” or whatever she wants to say. They’re taking the absolute piss

Either that or she should nick some of their good china

Was it 1954??
Xmasprrssiehelp · 17/12/2021 20:29

Depends if it was a child who would go to bed at 7/8 and just needs an adult present in the house, who would be day around watching Netflix, eating what ever they wanted, could sleep on the job.

I would of offered £30-40 in that scenario though and a taxi home

Maunderingdrunkenly · 17/12/2021 20:31

I did it as a teen in the early 2000s in the East Midlands and I’d get c. 40 quid for the evening (7-12) but no snacks. They were weirdly healthy and I used to get my sister to bring crumpets over

KerryWeaver · 17/12/2021 20:31

The £20 babysitting hours have well expired at this stage as your DD is now at 3.5 hours.

She should call them to tell them they need to come home immediately.

sofakingcool · 17/12/2021 20:32

@TwistedOlivers

I'd be ringing them up at about 9-30 to say I'm puking my guts up and they need to come home

Tight fuckers

They'd probably reduce the payment! HmmConfused
PurBal · 17/12/2021 20:32

Rate around us is £8.50 per hour. But dinner, bed plus after midnight I’d be expecting to pay £10+.

artquejtion · 17/12/2021 20:33

My 18yo babysits £11 per hour and the parents ALWAYS give extra if they arrive home after midnight, without her ever having to ask. They also pay for an Uber home.

BFCfairy · 17/12/2021 20:34

£10 _12 ph here depending how late and also.how much bedtime they need to.do
