AIBU for cancelling the milkman

We have a milk man delivering twice a week, it is a really useful service for us and lovely milk. The only problem is the milk is delivered at 1-3am with a bright torch. This sends our dog crazy and then wakes us up. We don't want to train the dog out of guarding the house at night if someone is shining a torch near our windows...
I have raised this with the milkman but I am not sure if he is trying his best. It wouldn't be too bad if the milk was delivered at say 5-6am, is it normal for milk to be delivered in the early hours?

AIBU here?? What do other people do with dogs?

Our milk is delivered at a similar time. We simply leave our porch light on so he doesn’t have any problems navigating. If you provide stable lighting, he won’t need to use the torch.

The torch is unlikely to be the cause of your dogs disturbance, more the sound of the milkman outside the door. Considering you actively want your dogs to kick off in any other circumstance like this YABU to expect them to be quiet……how are they going to know it’s the milkman and he’s on the ‘allowed’ visitors list?
You would be even more unreasonable to expect the milkman to change his hours to suit you!
IMO you need to cancel

I stopped my milk delivery when I left full time work in 2014 in a bid to save money. It was OK until lockdown when I couldn't get eggs or skimmed milk but my aunt had both delivered no problem from her milkman. I had also been thinking that it was a shame not to use a service with reusable bottles etc, so I asked him to deliver again. He comes at about 2 am but doesn't disturb us. We have no dog though. Could he leave the milk further from the house?

I saw an advert for milk delivery person. Start at 11pm finish at 9am. Someone will get there’s early. Mines gets dropped off at the foot of the drive rather than waking the dog/ house.

2 nights a week, you could shut the dog in a room in the back so he won't see the torch

penniesdimesapplespears · 18/12/2021 07:39

I'm sure your milkman will have lots of other potential clients to replace you. He won't mind if you stop deliveries. In fact it might be a relief for him if your complaining he uses a torch at 1am to see where he is going plus also aggressive animals are intimidating/ dangerous.

Our milkman delivers about 2 a.m. he is very quiet. Our dog used to wake up the street barking but she is now used to him. Lifts her head up, confirms that it is only the milkman and that there is no immediate threat to her hoomans and goes back to sleep Grin

I cancelled our milkman in the summer. .he was coming around 11 or 12.....woke me up.,and if he hadn't in the summer it would have been sitting out for hours.

Swisscheeseleaves · 18/12/2021 08:34

How's he supposed to see where he's going in the dead of the night without a torch?

starfishofbethlehem · 18/12/2021 08:42

Unfortunately not everyone can get their milk delivered at 7am. Someone has to be first. And the poor guy needs to be able to see where he is going.

WulyJmpr · 18/12/2021 08:54

I had to cancel our milkman as he kept skidding down our gravel driveway in his car at 3am. Hmm

Also in a petrol car...what happened to the electric milk floats?

Hoppinggreen · 18/12/2021 08:58

We had to cancel our milk for the same reason. He parked with his headlights illumination our bedroom every day at 4 am then woke the dog up.
It just didn’t suit us

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 18/12/2021 09:00

Nothing wrong with cancelling if the service doesn't suit you. But I don't think they could do much more than they currently are - he can hardly scrabble around in the pitch black at 3am, and even if he did I bet your dog would still notice someone sneaking up to the door. I think you won't find any milkman who suits your needs, unless there is someone who you book a time slot with.

I cancelled our milk deliveries a couple of years ago for the exact same reason as @WulyJmpr
