Mounting 55" inch TV on plasterboard

Hi all,

I bought a new TV on Black Friday as my current one seems to have a Poltergeist inside it (after 10 years of good service).

I'm keen to mount the new TV on my living room wall but living in a new build, the walls seem to be paper thin and my preferred wall is the wall between living room and staircase.

Someone came to fit the TV today and I asked him if it was necessary to screw the TV bracket into studs in the walls. He said this wouldn't be necessary but he did say I should buy a sturdier bracket (the one I bought was a One For All compatiblewith ves and for TVs up to 90".and costing £70.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Should I take a risk on putting up the TV on a plasterboard? I'm afraid the TV will come crashing down one day.

Thanks

There are a range of fittings that work on just plasterboard, spring toggles for example. Plenty of YouTube videos out there showing best methods

I wouldn't - I have mounted stuff on plasterboard using suitable fixings before but I'd want a TV fixed to the studding. Ironically a sturdier bracket will make it worse I would have thought as it will be putting more weight into the plasterboard

As long as they use the right fixings it's fine. We have two huge tvs on plasterboard and they've never budged an inch.

I have a large TV and also a bloody heavy mirror that I hung on my (plasterboard, flimsy as fuck) bedroom walls with these www.screwfix.com/p/easyfix-hollow-wall-anchors-16-32mm-m5-x-72mm-10-pack/11143.

They've both been up since 2015 and I've never had a problem Smile

I’d be wary. Yes you can use the right fixings but I’d want to find the stud woodwork and use that instead.

FreedomDrops · 16/12/2021 13:38

I wouldn't do it. TV falling on someone sitting beneath it will hurt. The proper way is to find the studs. However good the bracket and the fixing, the bottom line is the strength of the plasterboard itself, unless you screw into studs.

Thanks everyone, a mix of opinions!

I'll try another handyman, as I think they should at least look for a stud in the wall.

Maybe I just need to give up and get a TV stand.

My brother has a massive tv (about 3 acres I reckon) on plasterboard. He said his friend who is a tradesperson did it and used special screws that kind of umbrella out into the wall …if that makes any sense 🤣. It seems secure and hasn’t fallen down in the year or so it’s been up
