AIBU? to do with employment xmas bonus

takenforgrantednana · 16/12/2021 12:28

so today the post arrived and included a POSTCARD from my partners employer giving him a £20 bonus which has been given via an account he has to log into online, nevermind that the £20 is a bit insulting and rather cheapsake of them its better than getting your p45 i guess.

so the issue i have is that this info was sent on a postcard, not in an envelope and so has become readable to anyone with contact to it, it woudnt take long for anyone to hack into the account if you have the knowledge am i being paranoid?

Did it include details of the account - URL, account no/username or whatever?

PILHELP · 16/12/2021 12:34

Absolute height of stupidity by his employer but YABU about the amount. They've presumably given what they can afford across all staff and some people would be very grateful

Tyjaro75 · 16/12/2021 12:34

I think £20 in this current climate with all the financial troubles over the last nearly two years is a lovely gesture. No it's not a huge amount but they are obviously trying to show their employees that they are appreciative of them. So many businesses folded and many lost their jobs so I think your response is way off kilter.

SleighbellsZ · 16/12/2021 12:38

Does it really matter about the amount?
They are giving what they can, to everyone.

Its a nice gesture at Christmas time for staff.
Be grateful, some companies give Jack shit.

takenforgrantednana · 16/12/2021 12:39

as my husband has never accessed that account before, it has given details of how to do that and set up the account. clearly it has his name and address on the postcard

oh i should have said the size of the company is huge! its involved in the petrochemical industry but its not about the sum of money involved its the lack of security

OP posts:
Sparklesocks · 16/12/2021 12:40

Is the username and password etc all on the postcard?

PILHELP · 16/12/2021 12:42

Well your OP is somewhat about the money, you called it a bit insulting and cheapskate, hence why posters felt the need to respond Hmm

takenforgrantednana · 16/12/2021 12:43

@Sparklesocks

Is the username and password etc all on the postcard?
no they arent, but it goes on to give instruction on how to set up the account if you have never used it beforehand, woudnt take much for joe bloggs to go to the website and try it and see if the account had been set up or not and then finding it was "brand new! set it up for their own access, i know this as i have been on the web site and filled everything in myself but being honest i didnt hit the send button

Is it definitely an external website rather than a work intranet? If it's an intranet it wouldn't be accessible without an encrypted VPN sign in.

takenforgrantednana · 16/12/2021 12:48

in comparision to previous years then yes its a bit lacking, all the men would trot out of work 2 days before xmas with a huge frozen turkey! which as my husband was made responsible for issuing them out to all 500 staff i had to point out that giving such huge birds out 2 days before xmas was a health hazard s they couldnt be defrosted in time and when i describe these birds as being huge i mean would feed at least 20 and just to say fit in your oven

So £20 is too little but a huge turkey that would feed a family for days is too much?!
You need to go and find something better to do with your time than slagging off your blokes employers. Maybe find yourself a hobby!

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/12/2021 12:51

I get nothing from my employers and nothing from service users

maybe you should read the point of the post! which is that this postcard i one of thee mot stupid things this company have ever done, most of the men on the site are not computor literate, they havent a clue what to do, and now being given this vi a postcard leaves them exposed to hacking

VladmirsPoutine · 16/12/2021 12:56

Has his £20 been nicked? If not log in, take the money out and be done with.

Squeezita · 16/12/2021 12:57

Has he tried to redeem the amount? Unless he goes through it, you don't actually know that anyone can register for the £20, so this is a bit premature isn't it?

If indeed he can sign up for it without entering any info specific to him then yes, this is the height of stupidity.

takenforgrantednana · 16/12/2021 13:01

if you read a few posts up i stated that i had gone thr the instructions and there was nothing stopping me from taking the money, so no its not premature and yes i could set the account up and nothing topping me taking the "money" other than its not money, its a figure that you can use to spend on your online shopping, such as in tescos morrisons iceland and then put the qr code on that
OP posts:
LubaLuca · 16/12/2021 13:04

So his money is still there? Why the upset then? No harm done, it's pointless getting wound up about things that didn't happen.

yes his money is still there for now! only because the access to that account hadnt been made previously, this will be the same situation for all the employees, and good 2/3rds of them dont have the knowledge of how to set up the account so by the time they manage to sort that out anyone could have gained access and set up the accounts and taken the "money"

Sorry I skim read that bit. Maybe once you hit send it will ask for some more details?

I think it would be helpful to know what happened once your DP completes the transaction.

You could even post a picture of the postcard once the money is safely in his bank so we can gasp at the stupidity of the postcard!

SituationCritical · 16/12/2021 13:11

Tell your DH to feed back to his employer if he is concerned about security or other aspects of this bonus. You sound very pissed off about something that was presumably intended to be a nice gesture and a thank you-even if you don't deem the amount satisfactory. Are they generally a "bad" employer? If not, take it in the spirit in was intended, redeem it (or don't!) and don't think about it again. Their security isn't your issue to worry about.

VQ1970 · 16/12/2021 13:24

Just a thought, but are you sure the postcard is genuine and not some kind of a scam? I too find it very strange that an employer would send that level of a detail on a postcard which anyone can see. Are you expected to input any of your bank details to transfer the bonus into it? If so, I'd be quite wary about doing so.

minipie · 16/12/2021 13:26

I agree my first reaction was phishing or remote access type scam.

He should check with work

Gingernaut · 16/12/2021 13:35

We had a six pack of mince pies for a team of 13 and a facsimile letter from BoJo.

If £20 is an insult, by all means, you can insult me all you like.

I bet people moaned about that also!

What's the relevance if this isn't about the money and only about security?
