To ask for postage refund?

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 16/12/2021 11:23

This is no real disaster in the context of life at the moment but it's annoying me so I'm asking for opinions.
I bought something recently from Etsy and paid the cost of the item plus £4 for first class postage.
The seller did not post the item for ten days, with no update given until I chased it, then told me they had been too busy to post item. They then did send it first class, so I received the item two weeks after I placed the order.
I have asked for a refund of the postage cost, my reasoning being if I pay first class I expected to receive within a few days. The seller has declined this request, their reasoning being they did actually send first class, albeit much later than I expected. There was no mention on their page of lengthy despatch time.
I realise I'm being picky over a few pounds, but who is right here?

What difference does it make? You requested it and she declined the request. What are you planning to do, show her this thread full of people saying she is BU And hope it changes her mind??

MrzClaus · 16/12/2021 11:29

You paid for the postal service being first class, which it was.

The dispatch time is a different issue entirely - anywhere on the Etsy profile did it state a dispatch time / anticipated delivery window?

Starcaller · 16/12/2021 11:31

Etsy stuff open takes a while to dispatch, especially if made to order or from a very small seller. How do you know it was ready to send before 10 days had elapsed?

Floralnomad · 16/12/2021 11:32

You are in the wrong , you paid for 1st class and they sent it 1st class , the most you can do is leave a review noting the slow dispatch.

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 16/12/2021 11:36

What difference does it make?
It makes no difference, and no I don't plan to show them the thread. I was just interested to hear some opinions from people.

No mention on the page of a despatch time, but it was a thing that already existed, pictured on the listing, so no making/customising needed. So my assumption was that a few days would be the expected delivery period, rather than two weeks.

They sent the item first class which you paid for. You made an assumption that it would be dispatched quickly (understandably). However the seller did not say they would dispatch within a few days. If dispatch time is not mentioned it is better to message and check rather than assume it will be sent within days.

girlmom21 · 16/12/2021 11:59

If there was an expected delivery date they didn't adhere to you could claim back the difference between first and second class but it doesn't sound like that's the case.

Shitty service on their part to not dispatch for 10 days though. I'd include it in your review so other customers are aware.

santasmuma · 16/12/2021 12:02

Oh my goodness do you not have anything else to do?

Rrrob · 16/12/2021 12:05

Are you sure their lead times are not listed? I run an etsy shop and have to list dispatch time.
I would leave a bad review if their dispatch time is listed as less than 10 days, but otherwise not much you can do.

PorkPieForStarters · 16/12/2021 12:05

On the delivery section on the product page it gives you an estimated arrival date. The seller decides their processing time and delivery options when setting up a product so they should allow for the time it takes them to make (if relevant), pack and dispatch the products, so it's up to them to set this realistically and it's also within their ability to extend their processing time if needed, or even put their shop on holiday to prevent new orders if fulfilling them is an issue for a while.

It is an estimate and things like postal delays or ordering at the weekend can impact it but, if it was way beyond their estimated delivery date, I'd take it up with Etsy.

You've reminded me to check on an Etsy delivery I was expecting already, thank you!

girlmom21 · 16/12/2021 12:07

People are allowed to do more than 1 thing a day.
takethecake · 16/12/2021 12:09

tbf etsy listings do have a "ready to dispatch in" section under "delivery and return policies"

TulipsTwoLips · 16/12/2021 12:10

yes, to be honest when they stated first class delivery I would have expected to receive it in a few days. Not amazon-style next day, because I understand a person has to package it, take it to the post office etc, but definitely not two weeks.

StressyMcStressFace · 16/12/2021 12:10

Oh come on everyone - so if you pay for 1st class postage you don't think it matters when the goods are sent? So theoretically the seller could wait a month, six months, a year before sending the goods? Surely when you pay for 1st class postage the implication is that you want the goods quickly! I think the OP has a point imo.

Oh thanks for the heads up, I didn't know.

Etsy always has a dispatch window and tells you when to expect it to be dispatched. All sellers have to input their processing time before they can sell an item. About your 4quid refund though its not something I would go after. I recently had something similar on etsy, the product was sent 7 days after the dispatch window. It is what it is though, its been sent, I'm not wasting any energy quibbling over a week.

I agree with this the OP essentially paid more for a quicker delivery so its very poor from the seller. I would definitely mention this in your review.
imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 16/12/2021 15:41

Thanks for the thoughts everyone, its interesting to see the different ideas. To be clear, I'm not in a rage or about to take legal action or anything. I'm just annoyed not to have had the experience I was expecting. I will mention the lengthy wait in my review as someone suggested, along with praise for the item, which is lovely (see, I'm not malicious).

Happy Christmas, @santasmuma, have a Xmas Smile

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 16/12/2021 15:49

I would be annoyed by it too. I think your reasonable annoyance is a seperate issue from the contract to supply the goods iuswim. So no, I probably wouldn't chase it anymore, but wouldn't order again from them, particularly if you wanted the thing for a time sensitive reason, eg birthday. I got put off someone who supplied brownies as they took a very long time to despatch, despite being well priced and good brownies. If I send something to cheer someone up, or whatever, I want it to be sent in a reasonable time frame, not after they have got over it, or had their birthday, or whatever.

I'm glad to have provided you with something to chuckle about. I was also a twat earlier, I'm sorry there was no need for my comment.

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 16/12/2021 16:54

@santasmuma that's ok, your comment genuinely did make me chuckle!
