Is this just not enough food? Dizziness?

Could a couple of days of low rations have left me feeling really dizzy - especially together with hardly any sleep?

On Monday, I had about 2.5 eggs scrambled on a slice of toast, and then an airline size portion of stew, plus a small chocolate mousse thing. A couple of gin & tonics and a beer to try to sleep on the plane, but no joy.

Yesterday I ate a large baked potato with cheese and a few bits of grilled veg. Before I had this at lunchtime, I had got so light headed and dizzy but it resolved really quickly after eating. Later a mince pie, a slice of soda bread and piece of cheese. Couple of glasses of wine.

I am so light headed and dizzy again today so just flaked out on the sofa. Ate bacon, eggs and soda bread but still kind of dizzy/ disoriented.

Normally I eat far more heartily but had such very stressful few days travelling etc and my appetite just goes - but do those amounts of food seem likely to be the cause of feeling shite, with hardly any sleep as well? I have no idea of the calories, just that it must be pretty low?

Can less food cause blood pressure to drop a bit? My blood sugar is fine (type 1 diabetic so I know).

Worried something else might be wrong (will be taking covid test as planned in several days) and we're here to spend Christmas with my mum who has cancer so it's all fucked up if I'm getting ill...

I’d blame the tiredness of travel, along with the small amounts of food, and adding alcohol.

ChangeChingyChange · 15/12/2021 13:38

If it was for 1 day I'd say its just travelling. But for 3 days I'd say you need to speak to a doc.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/12/2021 13:41

The tiredness of travelling / jet lag if you’ve travelled a distance, plus alcohol would seem the culprit

I also wonder if you’re dehydrated as that can cause similar

ikeepseeingit · 15/12/2021 13:42

I would hold off on the drink for now OP. If it’s still like this tomorrow you should book in with the doctor really. Try to up your calories and rest as much as you can x

Hereagainnewlogin · 15/12/2021 13:43

It's not much food, lots of travel, and a lot of alcohol considering you haven't eaten too much.

Id say knock the g&t/wines when you have to travel. I used to love a glass of wine when on a plane but I realised it made me feel pretty crap so I don't do it any more.

Air travel and alcohol are both pretty dehydrating which is probably what makes you feel crap.

KatyRebecca84 · 15/12/2021 13:43

Erm maybe the alcohol?!

OneRuleForThem · 15/12/2021 13:43

If you’re ill why are you drinking so much alcohol?

gamerchick · 15/12/2021 13:44

Are you drinking enough non alcohols?

Fellrunner85 · 15/12/2021 13:46

It's plenty food, but bloody hell that's a lot of booze, especially if you're feeling rough.

WhoopsWhatsMyNameAgain · 15/12/2021 13:48

Whilst that's not much food, its not low enough to cause regular faint spells if eaten spaced out.

I would suggest eating more. Then you'll know if you're still getting faint or not.

WhoopsWhatsMyNameAgain · 15/12/2021 13:50

Sorry just read you have type 1 diabetes. Even if your blood sugar is fine you need to be eating as normal. Incorporate some soup and toast and don't wait until lunch to eat.

And yes, cut out the alcohol for now.

Birthdaypug · 15/12/2021 14:01

Are you sure you haven’t got vertigo? Does it feel a bit as if you are on a boat, slightly rocking when you move? I get this after flying, especially a fairly long flight. It usually goes in 2-3 days.

RubyFakeLips · 15/12/2021 14:04

Are you dehydrated? Travel, alcohol and salty food along with being tired, I’d wonder if you getting enough fluids that aren’t alcoholic.

tara66 · 15/12/2021 14:09

Vertigo? Of which there are multiple causes.

Mercurial123 · 15/12/2021 14:25

Stop drinking alcohol until you feel better?

girlmom21 · 15/12/2021 14:27

How is it plenty of food? She's not even eating one full meal a day.

I wasn't feeling in any way ill when I drank on the plane on Monday - just tired and stressed.

Then yesterday, I felt dizzy before eating but felt ok about half an hour later.

It's just today that the dizziness went on and on after eating.

Thanks everyone, I reckon it is/ was dehydration!

We don't need to eat any particular amounts as type 1. I match insulin to food. I just can't eat much when very stressed though.

Am getting really hungry now however!

Thanks all again.

But alcohol lowers blood sugar OP, diabetes or no diabetes.
That' why chip shops and kebabs are popular after the pubGrin
Glad you've sorted it.

AbsentmindedWoman · 15/12/2021 22:37

Yes, alcohol lowers blood sugar - which was why I could eat my mince pie without my nice steady horizontal line on my glucose monitor budging too much, it sort of counteracted the insane rush of sugar entering the bloodstream Grin

I didn't drop under 4 at any time, which is usually a number I'm very comfortable sitting for long periods - it's a good normal non diabetic number.

I aim for normal numbers as much as possible to reduce long term diabetes damage.

Anyway now I'm starving so planning to feast!
