I just walked out of work over covid.

When I arrived to work this morning my colleague told me that her friend she was with yesterday had just tested positive for covid and she has done a lft herself and was negative, she hasn’t done a pcr. I work in a very small space with no windows if she has picked up covid I’m more than likely going to get it from her as we share a till, toilet, fridge microwave in such a small space.

I said maybe she should of stayed home until she got a negative pcr, she was with this friend in her house having a drink,no masks of corse, windows shut, I feel like there is a 50/50 chance she will more than likely pick this up.

With Christmas so close and the schools finishing this week I thought is this worth the risk for a 3 hour shift when I could potentially pick this up and spread to my family.

I decided to go home and she said she understood their was a risk and is fine with it.

I feel a little guilty now, but I just keep thinking of the points…

-With her friend in a house chatting who has covid.
-we have no windows so are breathing each others air
-sharing everything at work
-schools closing tomorrow
-Xmas
-only lost out on £30

The nightmare and hassle it would of been if she does have it and I pick it up would of been catastrophic!

Would you of stayed or been out the door

Just 3 hours on minimum pay, I will be back in next week, when she will at least have done a pcr

@organisedmother

Good and saintly I like tht thanks! Was more like a uhhh i don’t like how we are sharing air.
Haha that's a good phrase I'm going to use that one on the bus
thatsallineed · 15/12/2021 13:29

If you work together in a small enclosed space with no ventilation, then your employer really isn't following current guidelines.

I wouldn't be happy about that either, and would probably have done the same as you.

ufucoffee · 15/12/2021 13:29

My friend who I was with last week has it. I don't. Nor does anyone else who was with her at that time. Her OH who she's been sleeping with and sharing a home with doesn't have it.

Outdoorbeanbags · 15/12/2021 13:30

If the friend she had been with YESTERDAY had just tested positive, I think it’s very unlikely that in the space of 24 hours she has caught covid off said friend, incubated it and started shedding virus to you.

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 15/12/2021 13:30

@MeltedButter

I would have stayed. Even if you live with someone with covid you don't have to isolate anymore.

Everyone's response will be different so what's best for you doesn't mean it's best for everyone.

Yes, you do have to self isolate, if your contact has omicron.
PrivateHall · 15/12/2021 13:31

I would have asked if she would mind wearing a mask and I would have done the same, and as usual taken care to have good hand hygiene. You could as easily pick it up from a customer given the small enclosed environment.

Aposterhasnoname · 15/12/2021 13:31

Honestly how the other half live. Wait a couple of days till the omicron tidal wave kicks off. If everyone does what you did, the country literally will grind to halt.

CornishGem1975 · 15/12/2021 13:31

Well I guess, she's following the rules which were put in place to stop the disruption of people having to take time off work and school etc so I guess YABU to expect her to act any differently as that's the guidance but YANBU to not want to be around her.

organisedmother · 15/12/2021 13:33

It’s the touch screen till that put me over the edge and made me think I don’t want to be here

Aposterhasnoname · 15/12/2021 13:33

“Yes, you do have to self isolate, if your contact has omicron.”

Wrong, if your fully vaccinated you have to go a lateral flow every day.

Findingthelight1 · 15/12/2021 13:34

Not true. You just need to do daily lateral flow tests. The guidance has (already!) changed.

vixeyann · 15/12/2021 13:34

I would be the same tbh. If work are okay with it and you are happy, it matters not a jot what others think. Everyone has their own views re what's right and wrong in this pandemic and are quite happy to make it know but, it comes down to your own judgement to do what feels safe for you.

Lipsandlashes · 15/12/2021 13:35

How could she have left work and why did you? Current guidance is to only isolate if you test positive - she hasn’t

TheStarMachine · 15/12/2021 13:35

I would have left too. My work would be ok with it and I don't want to take the risk of catching covid if I can possibly help it.

ShirleyPhallus · 15/12/2021 13:36

@GoodPrincessWenceslas that’s not true

I just walked out of work over covid.
organisedmother · 15/12/2021 13:37

Very true! To be honest if we had windows I wouldn’t of mind, think I’ve seen that advert to much on tv about keeping places well ventilated!!

OP posts:
JinglingHellsBells · 15/12/2021 13:37

After 1 day she won't be showing symptoms or have enough viral load to show up on a test yet.

She needs to keep testing daily

😂😂😂 sorry, I shouldn’t laugh, but puhlease, it’s bloody airborne, fomite spread is the very least of your worries.

I just figured her sat with her friend for hours drinking coffee and having nibbles at there house while her friend was positive the whole time probably wasn’t a good thing.

OP posts:
Hemingwayscatz · 15/12/2021 13:40

Yeah, YABU. This is all very silly. If she did catch it from her friend yesterday, she won’t be contagious yet anyway. There’s at least a 5 day incubation period and you’re only thought to be contagious 2 days before symptoms start so it’s too early for her to be shedding the virus even if she has caught it which she may not have.

My 10 year old DD had covid a couple of weeks ago and my DH and 2 of my DC didn’t catch it despite living with DD and giving her cuddles etc. I caught it but she did cough in my face when we did the PCR test so… I was fine fwiw, I’ve had worse colds.

organisedmother · 15/12/2021 13:40

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you

was her friend double jabbed or had a booster?

If not, they were a bit silly not to open a window or choose somewhere ventilated to met.

organisedmother · 15/12/2021 13:41

That’s good to know.

organisedmother · 15/12/2021 13:42

We have no windows unfortunately, she is doing the correct procedure but she is very uncomfortable being there.
