Name changed in case recognized.

I am going to try and keep both sides equal and not biased as I want honest opinions of what you think and what you’d do/choose.

This is a communal staffroom.

Person A: wants the door to the outside open for fresh air. Doesn’t want to be in the staffroom if it’s shut due to the covid risk. Won’t use the staffroom if the door is closed.

Person B: wants the door shut as they get cold. Says they don’t care about Covid and would rather risk it than be cold. Won’t use the staffroom if the door is open.

Yabu: let person B keep the door shut

YANBU: let person A keep the door open

Either way a member of staff is excluded and both not happy with the other’s opinion. The only alternative for them is to eat alone in their cars. How would you handle it?

Ventilation does make a difference to viral load and as a preventative measure. Where have you been not to know this

Yes it might well do but if that leaves a staff member needing to put on multiple layers to keep warm then it is not an appropriate mitigation in that particular scenario.

knittingaddict · 15/12/2021 13:34

Why not? I'm genuinely unsure why wearing a few extra layers is such a terrible thing to expect of others if it helps to mitigate the spread of a virus.

SinoohXaenaHide · 15/12/2021 13:37

The harm done by having to wear more clothing to be warm is insignificant.

The harm done by choosing not to minimise the risk of virus transmission during a pandemic is significant.

Door open

SoupDragon · 15/12/2021 13:39

If you are going to suggest that it is appropriate for an employee to have to put on layers, gloves and scarves to be able to comfortable enough to sit in a staff room, a room designed to give staff an opportunity to relax, then I will suggest an equally appropriate action is for person A to stand on a chair and stick their head out of a window. Because it makes about as much sense.

It really doesn't.

SoupDragon · 15/12/2021 13:40

Also, "door open" protects everyone.
"Door closed" makes one person happy that they don't have to put a coat on.

caketiger · 15/12/2021 14:02

Door open. And I hate the cold.

MadeOfStarStuff · 15/12/2021 14:06

Door should be open, in line with guidelines to increase ventilation as much as possible, person B should wear layers.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 15/12/2021 14:22

@NannaMcPhoo

Person A is totally illogical. They are happy to sit with multiple other people but having the door open somehow makes this safe. oookay then

I side with person B and person A can go take their chair outside if they are that much of a Chicken Little.

Another one with a few brain cells missing
HopefulProcrastinator · 15/12/2021 14:45

Person A should get their preference as part of recommended safer ways of working...hence the reason our children and their teachers are freezing their arses off in school.

It's proven that good ventilation makes a substantial difference to the ease at which germs (including but not limited to covid) spread. We're in a pandemic, trying to keep the economy rolling along - measures to keep businesses open are preferable to them being closed. Unless this is Person B's game plan "I'm too cold to use the staff room so must WFH"!
