Is it helpful for writing christmas cards/ party invites?
Or against date protection/ safeguarding/ GDPR?

This would not happen at the school my kids went to in Scotland.

dementedpixie · 15/12/2021 07:30

Our school didn't allow it. It's not essential information. If there's a lot you don't know and you're giving to everyone in the class then just leave the envelopes blank. Is the school not discouraging cards this year?

UghFletcher · 15/12/2021 07:31

Our school gave out a list of first names only for our class - only if you asked for it

SomethingBeginningWithX · 15/12/2021 07:31

We are in Scotland and have a list we can see on the app.

icelollycraving · 15/12/2021 07:31

First names is fine.

Meatshake · 15/12/2021 07:31

We got a list of "Amelia, Charlie, Reggie B, Reggie T" type names. Nothing identifying.

PicaK · 15/12/2021 07:33

Against gdpr
Also, most schools frown upon the waste of card/paper. They often say no cards.
(I'm an older mum so although I can see the point I do find it a bit bah humbug. I go along with it but with a mournful longing for the olden days)

DappledThings · 15/12/2021 07:34

For school we had our own compiled from the class WhatsApp group. For DD's nursery class I asked for and was given a list of first names of her class.

chasingthunder · 15/12/2021 07:34

Schools don't give out full names but only the first name and first initial of a surname if more than one child has the same name.

TeenMinusTests · 15/12/2021 07:34

We got a list in reception before Christmas - very helpful. It's nothing a more able child couldn't tell you anyway and it saves children being missed out.

12 years later it is still pinned to a board at home with some phone numbers/parent names added, leavers crossed off and new starters added.

Exhausteddog · 15/12/2021 07:36

When my DD started school (2011) we got a class list of everyone's full name, address, parents email, phone number and the names of siblings!

sst1234 · 15/12/2021 07:37

What is anyone going to do with first names of children? It’s not like she’s sharing their blood group or anything.

princesspeppax · 15/12/2021 07:37

Im in Scotland and we can see list of names on the app, my daughter used this to do her Christmas cards.

BabyofMine · 15/12/2021 07:38

I think it’s a bit ridiculous to claim under U.K.-GDPR that a list of first names is wrong. These children are for the most part going to be in the same class with the rest of the children for seven years. They know who those other children are and by the time they are in the later primary years will be able to make that list themselves.

I DON’T think last names should be given because it’s not needed for Christmas cards, party invites, and there can be issues around surnames - my relatives, the kids use a different surname to their actual surname (complicated) and it can possibly be a child protection issue.

SomethingBeginningWithX · 15/12/2021 07:38

In what way is it against GDPR? It's a list of names only, it's not dates of birth, addresses, medical conditions or anything sensitive. I'm all for privacy but it would seem excessive to treat this as confidential information from another parent unless there are some safeguarding concerns around a particular child.

Don't your kids know the information anyway? My 5 year old knows all the names in his class.

AnxiousWeirdo · 15/12/2021 07:39

Our school don't give out names but our year groups parents have put our kids names on a list in a private Facebook group for Xmas cards.

dementedpixie · 15/12/2021 07:39

I'm sure schools have better things to do than print off names for everyone so they can write Christmas cards!

Maryann1975 · 15/12/2021 07:40

Our primary school years were pre Gdpr and we could always get a class list if we asked. I can’t see the problem especially if it’s first names only. Some of the children in the class, even in reception would be able to tell you everyone’s surnames anyway, so they aren’t exactly a secret.

Vuvuvuzela · 15/12/2021 07:42

We have all of ours from logging into Google classroom during lockdown

Soubriquet · 15/12/2021 07:42

My school does it but it’s the first name only. If there are more than one child with the same name, they have their last initial such as Alfie A and Alfie B

Theremoresefulday · 15/12/2021 07:43

I don’t think you’d get full names but can’t see why you wouldn’t get first names

Mammyloveswine · 15/12/2021 07:45

We don't allow in my school-instead I tell parents to get their kids to write 27 cards with "love from Jimmy" on

TeenMinusTests · 15/12/2021 07:48

Providing names may be preferable to dealing with queries from parents as to names, or upset kids who have been left out accidentally. (Remember it would likely be the same kids who get left out by a lot of others if there isn't a list.)
Pamsresearch · 15/12/2021 07:49

I spent ages creating the list myself when DS was in reception. I thought I knew all the children, but in a class of 28 I was missing one and only had 27 names. It took me hours to work out it was DS Grin

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 15/12/2021 07:49

We aren't allowed to see the names written down of the dc we see twice a day...
