To fucking HATE bunions

Not really an AIBU sorry just a rant AngryI have 2 bunions and I’m fed up of how painful they are. Has anyone ever had them operated on? How bad did they need to be and what was the operation process?

I’ve heard horror stories about the surgery and was adamant I would never want it but my feet are throbbing every day and I’m waking up during the night with the pain now

Yes you are being totally unreasonable, everyone else loves having bunions on their feet? 🙄

MrsFin · 14/12/2021 22:25

I'd love to hear about bunion ops too.
I have one. Not as bad as yours, but sore if I bang it and if I wear tight shoes.

Nicknacky · 14/12/2021 22:29

I’ve had the surgery. It wasn’t pleasant and a header recovery then I thought but I’m glad I did it.

Concestor · 14/12/2021 22:31

I've had mine done. This blog is one that I found useful beyondbunions.blogspot.com/?m=1
I don't regret having mine done. I had both together like in the blog and they are great now, it was so worth it.

Bit harsh 🥴

I will read that blog because these things don't get any better with age. I bet it will take 4 million years with the NHS now though.

SunAndSea37 · 14/12/2021 22:35

I’ve had it. It’s a pretty miserable few weeks but WELL worth it and I never get any trouble from mine now. You need someone to look after you for the first week pretty much as you won’t be very mobile.

explodingeyes · 14/12/2021 22:36

I hate mine too. So depressing. Mine aren't really bad but I have very wide feet anyway so finding shoes that don't cripple me is hard and also very expensive (and nice ones are hard to find).

Ubiquery · 14/12/2021 22:36

I’ve just realised that I haven’t a clue what they are.

Aw thanks for replying! Do you mind me asking how bad it was for them to do the surgery and was it under the NHS? My big toe is pointing under my other toes (not completely but maybe 30/40 degrees at a guess) but my podiatrist said it was only a mild and that surgery is really harsh and only for severe cases. I didn’t even want any surgery at all but orthotics and appropriate footwear hasn’t helped and it’s so painful nowSad

Thank you for the link!! Oh wow you’re brave getting both done together! Do you mind me asking how long you were off your work etc for with it? Were the hospital ok with you getting them both done together or did you have to request it? Seems a good idea to get it all done in one go Smile

I have had a big bunion on my right since I was 22. In my mid 30s now and it's awful and so painful. I'm following this thread for advice also OP and I really do feel your pain

Pinkglitterglue · 14/12/2021 22:40

I’m only just in my early 20s and I feel like I’ve got the feet of a 90 year old! Blush I didn’t want any surgery or harsh treatment and I’m not even sure if they would qualify for it because they’re not awful, but I stubbed my foot off my bedroom door tonight and it was the last straw! 🙃

SmileFlowers do you mind me asking if it worsened between your 20s to 30s? I was hoping it wouldn’t get worse throughout my mid/late 20s as I’m not going to grow anymore but from what I’ve read online they seem to just get worse as you get older regardless of age? Sad

I have a large bunion on one foot it isn't too painful but it makes it difficult to get shoes. I have spent years wearing only trainers but I have recently discovered that Hotter do XXXL (extra wide) in some of their shoes and boots.

Sarahlou63 · 14/12/2021 22:44

Before photos

Purplewithred · 14/12/2021 22:45

I had mine done privately. Both at the same time. Absolutely worth every single penny.

Purplewithred · 14/12/2021 22:46

Oh my god @Sarahlou63 mine were nowhere near that. Sadly I didn't have the wit to get any before photos. My grown-up children bought me a pair of beautiful Russell and Bromley boots as a celebration for having them done It was so lovely to be able to wear normal shoes

Cakemumma33 · 14/12/2021 22:46

I'd say no it hasn't maybe a small bit. But I had ivf x9 rounds and it's grown a lot since then

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/12/2021 22:47

People love to tell horror stories about how awful bunion surgery is, it was in the 1950's but isn't any more.
I see so many patients who wish they had had their bunions done when they were younger and it's now too late. They go on to develop crossed over toes, ulcers because they rub on everything and they can't walk any more.
My mother and both siblings had theirs done and were fine, they look great now and they did not have a horrible recovery.
The longer you leave it the worse it will become, athritis and worse deformity which can lead to a much more harder operation.
If you get diabetes at some point they will cause all kinds of problems, ulceration, possible risk of amputation, osteomyelitis etc etc.

hammyhamster72 · 14/12/2021 22:49

I've had both feet done (4 months apart) the surgery is fine, recovery is hard going as you will be off your feet for a while but 100% worth it.

Mine were classed as moderate but like you they throbbed and hurt if I knocked them.

No chance of them being done on the NHS for me unless I basically couldn't walk so went private - probably between 2-3k per foot if you're self funding.

These things do not get better with age and I didn't want them to get worse so bit the bullet and no regrets at all.

You have a choice of local or local plus sedation I chose the latter and didn't know a thing about it.

Do it if you can

Sarahlou63 · 14/12/2021 22:51

And 3 weeks later (today). I won't lie, it's been beyond painful but it's done and I should be wearing normal shoes by the spring.

Cost €3,000 all in here in Portugal.

Nicknacky · 14/12/2021 22:53

I paid privately as I knew I wanted to try for a baby. My bunion came on really quickly and I had the op about a year later.

If it’s causing you that much discomfort I would definitely consider it.

Samedaysame · 14/12/2021 23:00

Had both my done together I had a local so I was awake and was able to watch. I was 34 at the time so glad I had the op. Pain was not bad and recovery was about 5-6 weeks. Please do it the joy of being able to walk normally will be well worth it

Pinkglitterglue · 14/12/2021 23:01

Thanks for all the advice- it’s reassuring to know other people have had the surgery and it was successful! Unfortunately I’m studying and really don’t have the money for private treatment, I don’t think it would be covered if I took out insurance now because it’s pre existing🙃 I’ll just need to wait on the NHS (if I even qualify for it at all!)
